Final NCS Rankings coming up this week...

If you have any input in any of the NCS divisional races, please feel free to add a comment below.

Great SJS and CCS battles yesterday as we head into the final week before the state meet.

Are there any teams and/or individuals still under the radar at this point in the season? What individuals and teams from Northern California will have the biggest impact at the state meet?

Very impressive times.

Marin Catholic girls have shadowed San Rafael through league and at MCAL(3rd places in each), behind Redwood and SR. Soph Theresa Devine, senior Natalee Fisher to repeat their NCS drives, with #3Katie Fitzpatrick, frosh, 14th at MCAL. #4 &5 are usually 2-3 min behind Devine, who's ready for sub-19:00 at NCS.

Are we close to top 5?

Daryl,

Thanks for checking in. I do believe Marin Catholic is in the top five along with Arcata, Moreau Catholic, San Rafael and St. Mary's.

This is always a tough division to call as some teams are rarely heard of until league and NCS time.

You have to include Piedmont in that group.

It seems that Newhall Park, Mt SAC and Spring Lake generate similar times. What do you think Albert? If so, can Petaluma run 1 thru 5 or place 5 in the first 7 at NCS?? Their first five ran 15:30-15:41-15:48-15:51-16:08. I heard number five was running under the weather...If those courses are similar Petaluma may have real shot at Loyola at State..

Here's my SJS overview. Davis really showed up to get the D1 title and can hopefully be a top 5 team with that loaded D1 SS group. Sheldon had another great race and will be a top 10 team if they show up to run. Biggest shock was Jesuit not making it to state.

Woodcreek looked like they were cruising and training through sections. plus their #2 was sick and they still won. they might have a shot at winning state if they all have great days and ran like they did at woodward earlier in the year. Oak Ridge should be a top 7 team at state. they have really come on strong and have close to a 30 second gap. Del Campo should be top 10 with their awsome 1-2 punch.

German looked like way too relaxed in demolishing the willow hills course record. he will easilly win state and should now be the favorite to win nationals. word on the street is that he is considering chico st. for college.

James Tracy looked great on saturday and should be top 3 in D2 at the very least hes been winning races and getting fast times all year. he got the willow hills record by 16 seconds before having German take it away later in the day. Also ran 15:23 at clovis earlier in the year to have the fastest D2 time in the state this year.
Since im on the subject of SJS D2 Garrett Seawell didnt look good at all i think he should recover from a "bad race" (he got 2nd to tracy in a time that was only 7 seconds slower than what he ran earlier in the season) he ran 15:09 at mt sac invite and has the 5th fastest time ever at willow hills that he got earlier in the year. could be a dark horse for top 3 in state.

thats my two cents on the sjs for state

I'm not sure newhall and spring lake are that comparable. Most bval teams seem to run faster at hayward than their league championship and most of the spring lake teams tend to run slower than their league champonship. There are exceptions, but in genteral that seems to happen. So I think spring lake might be a little faster than newhall.

From a reliable source, Spring Lake Park runs 1.3% faster than Hayward which means a 15:40 at SLP is worth a 15:52 at Hayward.

I haven't looked at enough numbers from Newhall to Hayward but it does appear to be slower than Hayward.

Spring Lake is flat and paved, Mt. SAC has the big hill. 1.3% faster at Spring Lake than Hayward sounds close but given the grass and the hill 1.3% may be a little conservative. Also if it rains this week Hayward doesn't drain well.

But Spring Lake is not entirely paved and flat. The first mile contains 4 hills, small to be sure, but still hills, and the second has two, and the third 2. Nothing comparitive to Sac, but then little is. Also, the course is only 40- 50% paved, the rest is all trail. Personally having run both courses, I think it really depends on the runner whether Hayward is slower than Spring Lake.

Melody,

I agree with you that different runners will run differently on difference courses. However, when you look at a large enough sample of runners in comparing course to course, there is usually a time difference that is fairly consistent.

Factors such as rain, nerves, sickness etc. aren't taken into account so in the end, we just have to let the race results tell the story.

at least in my experience, spring lake is slower by one second in comparison to ncs. but that's just me. i think it's pretty darn close to exactly the same.

Melody - I've run NCS at Spring Lake (many moons ago) and league at Hayward. Spring Lake's hills aren't much, it's a rolling/flat course while Hayward has the big hill. So as Albert says it comes down to a runner's strengths.

A great downhill runner can thrive off the big hill at Hayward but a weak uphill runner can have trouble. Spring Lake you get rolling and imo it's easier to maintain pace and energy while Hayward's hill takes more out of you. On balance a flatter course with more pavement should run faster for most of the runners.

I think it's fair to say you all have thoroughly convinced me. I agree with most everything said in the comments above, I think the point about the hills is very good. Thank you for you responses.

booya kasha. check it. ya would have to be barmy sick in the head ta say that spring lake compares to hayward. ive meself ha run both and my high school PR (15:37) be run at spring lake while not as impressive times run at hayward (15:58). i think dat whoever said 1.3% is almost spot on. much respect. again, keep it in yo brain that it depends on the runner but i think at hayward it is more likely to run slower. specially if conditions are poor

Anonymous said...

i would just like to point out that hayward actually has two "big" hills, as you have to run it twice. I think it is at least 1.3% slower, probably more like 1.6 or 1.7% slower than the spring lake course.

I think everyone understands that given equal performances the courses dont run the same times. Its great everyone knows that now!

ARROYO IS A SLEEPER TEAM IN NCS THAT IS NOT WELL KNOWN AND WILL SURPRISE MANY PEOPLE

Anonymous said...

Who is Arroyo?

Albert Caruana said...

Arroyo is usually in Div II but will be competing in Div I this year. They finished 2nd to Castro Valley at the HAAL final. A runner you may have heard of, ran at Arroyo...Yong-Sung Leal.
