Sara Hall victorious at the Millrose Games today...

The former Montgomery HS and Stanford University runner (then Sara Bei) wins for the first time in 10 years at the Millrose Games.  Her last victory at the historic indoor meet was as a high school senior over Erin Donohue (4:57.10 to 4:57.12) captured in the photo below courtesy of the website formerly known as...http://www.dyestat.com/rivals/8080910.html

Here is a picture of Sara winning today's 1500 in 4:15.35 following three 2nd place finishes in the past three years.  The photo is courtesy of the Associated Press.

Steve Prefontaine and the Civil War football game

The following article was relayed to me by former College Park HS and California Berkeley runner Craig Lee.  Trackfocus.com is in the midst of Steve Prefontaine Week in celebration of what would have been Pre's 60th birthday this week (January 25th).  One of the articles posted on the TF site details a charity relay race between Oregon and Oregon St during their Civil War Football game.  It came down to a battle between Steve Prefontaine and Oregon St. freshman Rich Kimball (former Jesuit HS and De La Salle HS runner pictured to the left courtesy of runningentertainment.com).

Kimball was an absolute stud in HS running 4:01.0 (converted 1600m. time) and 8:43.5 (converted 3200m. time).  He's the #1 NCS runner in both race distances on the NCS All Time Track and Field List.

Track and Field clinics at Serra HS (January 30th)

Good morning,
On Sunday, January 30th, Serra High will host a variety of clinics for track and field officials. The Pacific Association of USA Track & Field will present clinics for the following:
1st...I know some of you have new FinishLynx cameras. If we can gather a crowd, this will be your opportunity to find out how to use them. Please bring your camera and laptop. You should be using your own equipment. The class begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends when you run out of questions.
2nd...I know some of you have versions of Hy-Tek's Meet Manager. This is your opportunity to learn how to use this software for your dual/multi-team meats. Please bring your laptops and software.
3rd…We have specific classes for Introduction to STARTING and Introduction to CLERKING.
4th…We are offering an “Introduction to Track & Field Officiating” clinic. Do you have students who are looking for an edge on their college applications. How many can say they are certified officials? Do you have parents who are going to help you?
Below is the link to a WORD document which gives more details. If you have more questions, please feel free to send me an e-mail.

NorCal Running Legend: Don Bowden

Yesterday, Hank Lawson posted the  picture to the left of former Lincoln HS (San Jose) runner Don Bowden on the front page of his website, www.lynbrooksports.com.  I consider myself a sports historian so I was familiar with the name.  After some quick research, I was reminded that Mr. Bowden was the first American to break the 4 minute mile as a 20 year old Cal Berkeley student in a solo effort in a race in Stockton on June 1, 1957.  His best event in HS was the 880yd. in which he ran 1:52.3 in 1954.  His converted 800m. time of 1:51.79 still stands as the 11th fastest time in CCS history.

If you would like to read more about Mr. Bowden, check out the following articles.
1997 Sports Illustrated Article:
Four Minutes of Fame

2005 Stockton Record Article:
Bowden passed test with first U.S. sub-4:00 mile

Interestingly enough, his Cal record for the mile lasted close to 50 years until David Torrence finally broke it on April 28, 2007.  You can watch the video of that race here:
