COLLEGE COMMITMENT
Las Lomas distance star Greg Drosky made an oral commitment Monday torun cross country and track and field for the University of Washington.
"I went up once unofficially (in November) and saw the school for thefirst time, and I loved it and loved the area, the team, the coaches andeverything. The official visit (last weekend) just solidified it in mymind, so I went ahead and committed. It's beautiful up there, and I've always liked the outdoors and running trails," Drosky said.
Drosky, who won the North Coast Section Division III cross country title in 2006 and was ninth in the California Interscholastic Federation Division III state championship race in 2007, also considered Cal Poly,UC Davis, UCLA and Oregon before choosing the Huskies.

Skyline All-Comers 1/26 Results
From meet director Chris Williams:
"Here are the results for the Skyline High School All-Comers Results for January 26, 2008. We didn't have that great of a turnout because, I believe, of the likelihood of a storm. We didn't even have a drop of rain. Hopefully we will have a great turnout this upcoming Saturday, February 2. There will be pictures available on our website www.skylinecrosscountry.com."

Running in the Rain
If you want to see what the weather looks like for the next week and beyond, check out www.accuweather.com. From my experience, the site is usually right on and most of the time, they are remarkably accurate down to the hour.
Unless you can run between the rain drops, you are going to get wet the next week or so. You can choose to wear rain gear during your run which will protect you from the elements. You can also go with your regular outfit of running shorts and a shirt and that works out just as well. The human body does a remarkable job of warming up after a few minutes and the rain is usually a welcome addition to most runs.
Lastly, following your run, you should immediately change to dry clothes. Do NOT put your shoes in the dryer. The hot air dryer will speed up the breakdown of the shoes’ material, and you’ll be wearing them out soon enough. The best advice is to stuff the shoes with newspapers and by morning, your shoes should be mostly dry. Some runners choose to alternate between two shoes which gives one pair of shoes a longer period to dry. Another benefit of alternating your shoes is that it takes up to 48 hours for them to rebound to their original shape after a run.
Any other helpful hints out there?

Article about Hayward Coach Will Matthews
The Daily Review has a nice article about Hayward HS Cross Country and Track and Field coach Will Matthews. He was named the NCS Track and Field honor coach in 1989 while he was coaching at Mt. Eden and the NCS Cross Country honor coach in 2005 at his current school. Matthews has also been the meet director for the NCS Cross Country championships these past XC seasons. While being an outstanding coach with so many athletes, Matthews was also a fine athlete.
You can read more about Mr. Matthews at the following link:

Grand Opening for Santa Rosa Shoe Store
Current Maria Carrillo XC coach Greg Fogg and former Maria Carrillo XC and TF coach Danny Aldridge (both elite master runners) recently opened a running store in Santa Rosa, called Heart and Sole Sports. On Feb 1st and 2nd they will be having a grand opening celebration, marked most noticeably by an all-comers meet from 9am-12pm on Saturday at Cardinal Newman HS. Paul Terek (Olympian in the decathlon) and Henry Rono (former multiple world record holder) will be there to sign autographs and such.
Below you can see Aldridge (left) and Fogg (right) offering gait analysis to a runner at the store.

The Long Green Line Movie - Sample
Joe Newton has won 26 Illinois State Cross Country Championships. His team won the inaugural NTN championship three years ago. He was the first high school coach to be part of the Olympic coaching staff in the the '88 games. He has coached at York HS in Elmhurst for 43 years! Needless to say, he is one of the greatest high school coaches in ANY sport. His first book, The Long Green Line, was first published in 1969 and you can still get copies of the book on several online sources.
The long awaited movie about this great coach is going to finally become a reality and you can learn more about the movie at the following link:

8th Annual San Rafael Twilight Relays
San Rafael HS is once again hosting it's Twilight Relays which will take place this coming Track and Field season on Saturday, March 8th.
From meet director Jason Jacobson:
The kids really love the relay races and running at night under the lights.
We have a place for beginners and veterans alike with multiple heats in each race ... so everyone gets to experience a "big meet" atmosphere.
Plus, we have the unique coed relays ... which gives the gals and guys one of the only chances to compete together.
We have a really strong line-up already! 1/2 filled!
Teams that will be attending so far.

Running Shoes...What to look for?
When it comes to distance running, the most important acquisition that you will make will be your running shoes. There is plenty of information out there that you can find which will make your next shoe buy an intelligent one.
First find a store in your area that deals with runners. Second, have somebody watch you walk and run so that they can see how you make contact with the ground. Try different kinds of shoes and get out of the store and run with them. Once you make your purchase, write the date of your purchase on the side of you shoe. This will be a reminder of when you bought your shoes. Once you begin running with your shoes, the rule of thumb is that a good quality shoe will last about 400-500 miles. If you can afford to, buy two pairs and rotate your shoes. The soles of your shoes take up-to 48 hours to rebound to their normal state so rotating your shoes will help. Finally, get good insoles for your shoes such as Sof Sole, Spenco or Superfeet.
The following link will give you more information regarding finding the right shoe for you.
•Running Shoe Guide - Sierra Trading Post
If you have any other helpful hints when it comes to purchasing new running shoes, please share them in the comments link below.

Core Strenghtening with Matt Tegenkamp Videos
Are you at home, pen in hand, wondering what to add to your new year's resolutions?
How about IMPROVING YOUR CORE STRENGTH!
So how does one develop a strong core? Check out the links listed below from Runner's World as they feature Matt Tegenkamp demonstrating his core routine.
Tegenkamp (formerly of University of Wisconsin) just finished 4th at the most recent World Championships in the 5000m and is the American Record holder in the 2 mile (8:07.07). Tegenkamp broke the American record came as he closed very strongly passing many elite runners including Alan Webb before he went on his record setting tear in Europe. Tegenkamp is also the 4th fastest American in the 5000m. at 13:04.9 and is the holder of a respectable mile personal best of 3:56.38. He is certainly part of the American running group that have made quite a statement in the distance running world scene.
In the next video links, Matt shows you his routine that covers the following:
•Part 1 - The Warm-Up
•Part 2 - Floor Routine
•Part 3 - Matt's Dumbbell Routine
•Part 4 - Matt's Balance & Glute Routine
Feel free to add other links that you may have discovered online that can help many of us out here with our core.
