Davis and Armijo have two of the top runners in the state, but they 5-6 in their section's division. This really highlights the depth aspect of cross country. It takes a strong 5.

This is helpful info for those that are new to the sport.
I'm just making an observation, not criticizing any program.

It's an accurate observation. If you see race results, there are two things that separate the good teams from the rest of the pack...the fastest 5th man and the shortest gap 1-5. At the Stanford Invitational, Great Oaks girls finished in a pack of 5. Last year in the D1 boys at the State Meet, 3 teams had their 5 scoring runners under 16:00, Great Oak, Dana Hills and Jesuit, they finished 1,2,3. One team I am really interested in seeing this weekend at Clovis is St. Francis, they have one Junior and the whole rest of their scoring runners are freshman and sophomores, so as good as they are, they best is (potentially) to come.

Thank-you! Great job putting something together like this for SJS. Always jealous of the CCS/NCS who consistently put out rankings.

Anyways, I agree with all the number 1's except for D3 girls. Rio has beat Vista in both leagues meet this year. They were close, but victories nonetheless.

Bella Vista boys has been crushing it this year, but I think the girls are ranked way to high. They only returned one (McKinney) from their awesome state-ranked team from the last 2+ years.

Tough one with Sheldon girls ranked so low, but I have to agree with their placement. I think what is throwing me off is that they are faster than Folsom (not enough depth) so maybe Folsom is just ranked too high?

Del Oro girls (D3)should be ranked 10th, if at all. The top girl runner is a sprinter and she is have a hard time even breaking 19:50 for 5k.

I disagree with Bill regarding Vista and Rio. Look at the CAL #2, Vista has huge numbers of girls all together. Rio # 3 - 5 are not consistent and they will probably not have the experience to beat Vista at Sections. My bet is Vista will win, Rio Second, but Placer??? Placer's number 1 and 2 would be 3 -4 on any other team, but 1-5 are all close so maybe.... who knows....

Regarding the last comment about Del Oro girls - they went down to the Bay Area and placed an impressive 2nd behind only St Francis. They beat many of the Bay Area's ranked teams, including Aragon, Carlmont, Presentation, Gunn and Willow Glen. And the "sprinter" you're referring to ran a 2:07 800M as a sophomore last year. This is her first year running XC... don't underestimate her potential once she gets some experience.

Bill--Bella Vista girls 5th place seems about right to me. True they only have one returnee from last year, but the teams under them have just 1-3 good runners and then fall away more rapidly than the BV girls.

D1 boys...Gregori boys have beaten Modesto three times (out of 3) this season in head to head MMC competition. Gregori also won the large school division at Artichoke...They finished 7th in SJS D1 last season, yet are not even ranked. This is a serious omission.
