Coming up...

Results from the Ed Sias Invitational (NCS) and the Earlybird Invitational (CCS) as soon as I receive them.  Results will also be posted from all over the state.  Check back in later and you will see them posted.

Any impressive performances to report from today's meet?  I was at the Ed Sias Invite today and the Branson, St. Francis (Sacramento), Maria Carrillo girls stood out there.  Miramonte looked strong up front along with Acalanes.  I was busy coaching my own team so maybe somebody else can chime in.  What stood out today?

Early Bird

Girls Teams: Monte Vista is the next Mountain View. They are going to be very good the next 3-4 years. Homestead stood out as well. SLV of course was up there as was Holister and lots of Aptos & SI.

Individuals: Maxwell and Estrada basically ran time trials. Times seemed slow today across the board but it was dusty and warm compared to the past few years.

Boys Team: Um...Bellarmine with their army. But Redwood from NCS looked good.

Individuals: Senior boys was quite outstanding. Richard Ho lost to the Madea runner but it was the best race of the day hands down.

Amazing to me how there aren't live results. State does it right with results online before they are even posted. Time to catch up with the times xc, at least you got it right for one race a year!

Albert, great meeting you today at Ed Sias. Branson's Julia Maxwell was the standout today and I think she will be the top NorCal girl by end of year.

The post from Anonymous must come from new people in the NCS - right Oz?!? The extremely happy and relaxed people in Belmont/San Carlos with an AWESOME new coach are very satisfied with the Earlybird results.

Hello friend,

For the last several years I have not commented on the situation at Carlmont High School, even though there were several times where I wanted to. The other day, I gave into that temptation and did make a comment on that situation. Here's why. This team is on to a new coach again, and the petty sniping continues. No one benefits from this. I suppose all my comment did was add to the pile. Oops. Didn't mean to. I apologize. Really.

A few years ago, when districts were laying off new teachers, I was pretty sure I was going to lose my job in Pleasanton. As I looked for future employment, the Carlmont job came open and it was one a few openings that I inquired about. I had no knowledge of the circumstances that left the position open. After a brief conversation with the athletic director, I was made to understand that there were no teaching positions open in the math department, so the job was not a fit for me. As things turned out, Pleasanton found some money and I kept my job here. As the season got started people started to get wind of what was going on at Carlmont and watching the circus that came from it, I have been eternally happy that there were no openings in the Carlmont math department. And to be fair, maybe the Carlmont people are glad there wasn't a position for me in the math department as well.

Until I read your post, I hadn't looked at the Earlybird results and probably would not have, but I wanted a little background before I responded here. To me, the Carlmont boys look like they had a really good day. The Carlmont girls do not appear to have a top runner right now (I don't know if anyone was missing from the line up), but they have a good enough pack to make some noise when it counts if people stay healthy and training goes well.

To answer your question, I kinda doubt that anonymous comment is from the NCS, or anyone from the Logan coaching staff if that is the implication, but the post was anonymous, so who knows.

It was an ignorant post no matter who created it though and the people at Carlmont are right to roll their eyes. To be overly satisfied or disappointed with a race that happens in early September, when the important races take place in November shows a lack of understanding of the sport on the whole and the way teams approach their races and seasons at large. The Carlmont team has absolutely nothing to be disappointed about in their results at the meet today and really should be encouraged. But they should be plenty disappointed that these message board comments continue. I have no idea who is coaching at Carlmont now, but if you are truly happy with this person leading the program, as you say you are, then stop it. No need to air dirty laundry, especially if your biggest complaint is now in Fremont.

Also, you can call out other people's anonymous comments if you want, but introducing yourself as my friend does not make you any less anonymous.

No offense but after all the smack talk this summer Losing to Bell has to sting.

As you know, the meet is scored differently than a normal race, as it is by grade level. For this reason, we can't be sure about anything as of right now. Team time means something, but even that has many different external factors- later races were hotter, most of the top guys from both schools are spread across the grade levels, and they weren't racing head to head in a lot of cases. Bellarmine and Carlmont both did really well overall in this first meet.

Agreed. But for this race under these rules (funky or not) Carlmont lost. Maybe not tomorrow but today. Everyone had the same races and Bellarmine came out on top.

Why is it so hard for people do admit defeat now days? You can use it as fuel or make excuses. You are doing the later.

P.S. Calmont lost and Bell may be #1 today but I think Carlmont wins CCS again as the bells just can't pull that thorn out of their side yet. That said how in the World does Bellarmine get so much freshman talent? Other schools are lucky to get one freshman in the 18's for three miles and they get an Army!

How does a private school get so much talent? Recruiting. Not outright recruiting like in college, but academic scholarships offered to talented athletes who do not need financial help whatsoever. I have friends whose children have been offered financial help to well known private schools for their athletic talent. Don't get me wrong these kids academically deserve to be at these schools but, finanancially there is NO reason for them to receive a reduced tuition rate. I will also say that the talented athletes who do require assistance financially seek out or are sleeked out by these schools. If my child had that kind of talent I would not hesitate to get them into the best program possible.

Coach Ozzie is right. Let the new Carlmont coaches begin their program with a fresh start. The kids seem happy and are running well. Let's worry about what happens in November and not base the season on a race on September 8th. Earlybird was a very good meet all around and people should be excited that XC is here again!

Actually outside of Maxwell, Estrada and the Senior boys the times looked awful.

Why was it so slow? Even top teams like SLV, Aptos (girls) had runners in the 22's. I agree that Homestead and Monte Vista looked real good.

As for the boys, Madera looked good. Everyone else was blah. Need to step up if CCS wants to compete at the state level.

It was a hot day - I figure you take off 15-20 seconds due to the weather. Course records would have fallen if it was cooler.

Course records did fall at the fast Miramonte Invite - and it was 91 degrees.

Girls ccs division 2 will be pretty strong this year. Katz seems to be having an amazing comeback as does Johnson. Silverman did not race, did Maya weigl? And mitty was not there either. Kylie goo is up there as well. will be interesting to see who gets the individual title there. Also lynbrook has a pretty strong number 2 in grace ling

SLV was Missing Girls, there 2,5 and 7 girl yesterday, I Heard MacMillian was out with the Flu, Lamb sprained her ankle the day before and one other was a No Show!Aptos was missing Hiltz and Stanger! Not to sure if Hiltz was going to make it back after seeing her in a boot yesterday!

It is Monta Vista, not Monte Vista (that is the school in the NCS).

For the Anonymous post about recruiting, please don't comment about that until you have concrete proof. "Recruiting" is illegal and unless your insinuating that all private schools break the rules just to get more talent on their cross-country team, than just don't comment. Its unfair to say that the only reason those kids get into these private schools and are helped out financially is just because they are fast runners. And another thing, most of the freshmen haven't even run really competitively until high-school, so where can you get times to "recruit" them for?
