Steven Sum disqualified in the 3200?? Can he still advance to CCS ??
If he was dq'ed at his league final, he is done running the 3200 this season unless he chooses to run in a post season meet.
No different than a false start. Looks like the mile just got tougher. Any word as to why the DQ? Another power play by a coach with a vendetta or something silly like a uniform?
Steven Sum was disqualified for stepping inside the track multiple times.
He was, however, reinstated today. So he's running.
If he did step inside multiple times he should be dq'd. Why reinstated? Wimpy officials?
Um, if he was DQd how can you be reinstated? Anyone else have a problem with this?
Ask the SCVAL Commissioner, he's the one who re-instated him. Seems a cone was incorrectly placed on the track.

Riiiiiigggggghhhhhhttttttt. Must have been placed in the middle of lane one. Lol.
Must Have Had Multiple Cones that were incorrectly placed on the Track! It also Seems interesting that only one runner couldn't run between the White Lines.
We see it all the time with the tracks now days with no rail. Kids run inside most every turn.
Talked with the meet official yesterday at a league meet and he informed us all what had Happened yesterday with Sum and said he stepped over a bunch of times and that's why he got dq'd. Gave all the runners yesterday a warning and said you will be disqualified. Not sure why he's getting a 2nd chance.
Why the second chance???
It seems logical the sooner athletes learn the rules and consequences that follow the better. Now there is a bad precedent set; if I break the rules I still get to race.
Shady.
Notwithstanding the fact that Steven Sum's reinstatement prevents another athlete from competing, it's the right decision to allow someone to compete if there was a discrepancy.
Does some know the SCVAL commish so we can get some answers? Seems unfair considering kids are getting DQd for crazy things that are upheld. Consistency would be nice.
Funny...yesterday at the WBAL trials a girl was DQ'ed for running inside the cones; she was DQ'ed...but not reinstated; of course, her name wasn't Steven Sum!! No guts from the SCVAL League Commish...
Why tracks, even Gilroy for that matter, do not have a rail is besides me. Some get caught for running on the inside, most don't. Sum are just too big to get a DQ (Bad pun I know). Fact is, this is what's wrong with our culture today. Sometimes there needs to be a tough lesson learned.
Maybe the SCVAL had some marbles after all. I don't see Sum.

I am pretty certain that he was reinstated.
Sum was reinstated. V2 of the qualifiers came out before the reinstatement was official. I talked with the timer of the SCVAL Qualifier for May 10th and Sum is in there, just waiting for Meet Directors approval before posting the pgm in case other scratches come in.

Could we get an explaination of Sum's reinstatement?
@Anonymous 1:17, many tracks (especially HS) don't have a rail because they're rather expensive: about $9-$13 per linear foot, or $11,000-17,000. It's easy to justify when something like this happens, but much harder when district and city officials are determining appropriate scope for the project.
One benefit of the old dirt tracks is that they all had a rail :-)
and they made a cool sound when you ran on it.
He goes to a wealthy public school. If he went to Bellarmine the DQ would have stood.
Come on. I hope that has nothing to do with the result of that DQ. As with all rules, they can be spun in many different ways resulting in what was the result with the Sum DQ and reinstatement.
Anonymous at 7:17. Here's your explenation. The SCVAL has no MARBLES!!! If this happened to say a no name 4th place finisher he would still be dq'd.
and anonymous at 10:14. Your point is not valid, cause the same thing would happen for a Bellarmine kid. Now if it happened to a Public school kid the DQ would stay. If I remember right. I remembber reading on here that in the BVAL meet last year that a kid got dq'd. Not a big name, or a wealthy school so he didnt get reinstated.
I think it's silly for anybody to think that somebody was dq'ed and reinstated based on what school he or she attends. Now the part that he or she is a really good runner could have come into play and was part of the decision (right or not).
anonymous at 11:44 am... in the BVAL 1600 last year a kid was DQ'd... I think he would have made it to CCS Semis but I don't know his place for sure. He ran 4:36 at the meet and was running on the inside apparently.
SCVAL judges DQ'd two WCAL athletes at the CCS Finals in the distance races over the last 5 years for reasons that had no basis but still was upheld. That Bell kid, was Kyle Rae and the DQ was upheld. Both cases involved kids that qualified for state. In the case of Rae the athlete run up behind him and fell without any contact.
Ironic when its one of their own its ok.
Fact is half the field in Gilroy and meets with no rail should be DQd. SCVAL shame on you!
They have no marbles!!! Printing the shirts right now!!
Hi guys, the real issue is with the SCVAL commissioner as a former SCVAL coach he has done this several times. He has over-ruled many DQs in the past.
SCVAL coaches are not fond of the commissioner, we actually boycotted having a league rep one year, but he just said we would not have a league meet for track in return.
We were and I believe are at the mercy of the comissioner's decisions.
Reminds me of last year at the NCS Tri-Valley Championships in the Boys 800. Two or three boys fell in the race and were given a second chance at NCS MOC. That was a ridiculous decision. The reinstated boys knew it too. They underperformed at NCS MOC and basically finished last.
Then you have the boys from TX that were disqualified in the relay for pointing to the heavens. Ridiculous!
I don't understand what the placement of cones has to do with the reinstatement. Can someone please explain this?
I thought he was DQ'ed for stepping inside the track during the straightaway.
"Then you have the boys from TX that were disqualified in the relay for pointing to the heavens. Ridiculous!"
That has been debunked. The relay team was disqualified for earlier taunting (now, you can argue that that was excessive) before pointing to the heavens. This was a clear example of a reporter not having all of the facts trying to sensationalize a story.
From my best understanding, the cones were said to have been placed incorrectly.
As for the relay team, I wish there was some video so we can see what they actually did.
thanks for the clarification on the TX relay team
The scval should be ashamed of themselves for reinstating Steven Sum. Why did they reinstate him? Because he's a high profile athlete from a wealthy school? This is ridiculous.
Looks like the BVAL followed guidelines and dq'd a even bigger athlete. A senior who has put in tons of work over the years. He still has the 800 and 1600. Got a feeling he's gonna run with some anger.
