Northern California Cross Country Rankings #4

A couple of pretty good meets yesterday (Scott Bauhs, Westmoor and Capital Cross Challenge) pit some of the better NorCal teams against each other. We are now one week away from Clovis when we will really see what teams can do against top-notch competition. You can check out all the competing teams at Clovis at this LINK. Where is Los Altos

Or Carlmont?? Why is Homestead still up there?

I agree with 11:40 and 11:53. In the CCS rankings, Los Altos, Palo Alto, and Carlmont are 4-5-6. Homestead is all the way in 10th. They have not raced well yet this year.

Interesting that St Francis MV moves up to the #1 slot (which I agree with) while not running this weekend. Dublin scoring 62 points at the Scotty vs SF putting 5 in the top 8 last week must have made an impression. Los Altos did not look good at Ram yesterday. Still don't understand what is going on with Bell not racing their top 7 in any event this year. Must be a grand strategy for November?

Appreciate all the comments. I think a lot of teams haven't really put their top runners together just yet and we will know where everybody stands in about a week or so. Dublin didn't run some of their top runners yesterday but showed their depth by still winning at Scott Bauhs. We will definitely see who is the top NorCal team at Clovis.

@12:07 Los Altos obviously did not run with their full varsity squad yesterday. Look at the SCVAL meet this week. Los Altos beat Paly without their number 2 runner.

Are these type of rankings going to be a weekly thing?

This would be a lot easier if everyone just ran their top 7 at every meet. I suspect there will be a law requiring it next year.

So this is high school. Kids have ACT, SAT, they get injured or sick and sometimes break up with a girlfriend/boyfriend. They have challenging AP classes, work part time and get senioritis. Sometime they run well when they shouldn't and awful when they should. Some don't like expectations and others thrive on it. They're kids.

Expecting top 7 to be on every meet is not really what this sport is. It's about performing your best for the 2-3 meets at the end of the season that mean something. So race a ton or hold them out, it will all get worked out in November when it matters.

Albert Caruana said...

What other girl teams should also be considered?

Anonymous said...

@12:30 you are right and that's why we need the new law.

Hard to see any of the top teams on the list holding out any of their kids because they don't like high expectations.

I agree with 12:30 and 12:40... there should be a federal law next season requiring teams to run top 7 every meet. People need to realize that running is number one priority over school and family.

WOW, Dublin wins and invite without it's top runners and drops out of the #1 spot, Harsh!

Anonymous said...

Why is Homestead still up there when Carlmont and Los Altos deserve their spot?

Anonymous said...

Though Dublin won the invite, some of the top teams there didn't run their top squads like Granda and De la Salle. Shows that Dublin might not be as deep as a school like St. Francis.

My guess is the rankings are also based on squads who have injuries. Like St Francis girls (SJS) are missing their #1 (Fauria) so far this season and are ranked above teams who have defeated them in meets.

Dublin is plenty deep and you could put up their boys against the deepest teams in Northern California. We will find out who has the best team at Clovis between Dublin and St. Francis.

Why is Whitney (boys) mentioned?

SJS analysis. Rocklin ran great yesterday. they definitely deserve a high ranking and have lots of depth with their squad. they will be a possible top 10 team at state. Bella Vista is deep and very good and deserves a top ten spot. Jesuit is still running without their other top soph, Salonites. I don't know what is wrong with him but I don't think he has run all season and he is really good. Davis should never be counted out and they beat Jesuit by one point at their league meet and Sheldon is always decent from that tough Delta league but probably dont have the depth to contend for a state meet berth but should probably make D1 section finals. McClatchy has some star power up front and good depth and they should be a factor at sections for state in D1. Also, Gregori and Armijo have both been really good over the last 5 years or so and they could both make moves at the end of the season to upset the Jesuit/Davis/McClatchy trio for the 3 spots to State. Del Campo has two really good up front but are really lacking in depth and will not be a factor in league but they are D3 this year so they could grab one of those 3 spots to state with two guys that will probably score top 5 points. Rio Americano looks good in D3 as always and Vista Del Lago and Del Oro both traditionally have solid programs that will contend as well. Nevada Union has moved to D3 and they have some strong up front runners and could contend for a state meet spot as well. Placer should be a favorite as a new addition to Division 4 and it is about time our section has a solid traditional program now in that division at state. Division 4 and 5 in the SJS have both been very weak at the State level and after making adjustments in the section, the hope is that we can get these stronger traditionally good programs in D4. I can be reasonably sure that Rocklin, BV, and Whitney will all be heavy favorites for the D2 state meet berths out of the SJS. Whitney is mentioned because they return 6 of top 7 from a state meet team last year with lots of upside with 4 soph on varsity. They have a transfer eligible coming up that will make a difference(at least that is what I have been told) at Clovis next week when they will finally put their top 7 together. Two of the soph had some setbacks in the summer but they are running a lot better now with improved times at capital cross and will run well next week and will be ready to go by championship time. Clovis should be good and the end of october/beginning of november will be really exciting in the SJS.

Mark, that is great analysis. Can someone do this for the CCS? To be honest, with the strange schedules and teams not running their best guys I'm not sure I even know what individuals are healthy and which are sitting it out until November.

It was great to see Del Oro boys win the unseeded race at Capital Cross. Given the right circumstances, they could challenge for a spot to state.

Rocklin is definitely the major team in SJS after Capital Cross, with them, Bella Vista, and Whitney competing for the section title, SJS D2 is looking even stronger than Division 1(no insult to the programs). As for Division 1, I think the battle is going to be between Davis, Jesuit, Gregori and Mcclatchy for those 3 spots, all teams look close after Capital Cross (and Jesuit might still have runners like Salonites that haven't made an appearance.) I don't think Armijo will be a factor, don't have the power or depth that these other teams have. Del Campo has been up and down in their races, so with those other teams in the mix I think that will be a close race too. SJS definitely does seem to be lacking those front runner teams that we see in other sections but it is making up for that in sheer depth!

Dublin didn't run their top 4 at Scotty yet their number 5 ran 15:25 for the win. Their depth is unreal.

Coach Ozzie said...

The team that Dublin ran at Scott Bauhs recorded the #25 team time ever run at Shadow Cliffs (any meet, not just Scott Bauhs). If you look at that list and what those teams accomplished in other meets, those are all pretty good teams. Most of those performances were from league finals, where teams are generally sharper than they are at the end of September. Those guys are doing a very good job.

Clovis won't settle who the best team is for SJS as teams like Jesuit and Nevada Union who will be running their #1 runners as individuals in the seeded race, while the rest of their respective teams will be in the unseeded race.

Albert Caruana said...

I am pretty sure they are running the same course for all races and it will be pretty easy to combine the times of seeded and unseeded races.
