To Bad about SAT's Test. It really Affected Artichoke this year. I Looked like teams were just Training thru this Meet Where they were placing there Runners.

Also, the meet was the weekend between Stanford and Clovis..

Granada went down to the Brea Invite yesterday (results on dyestatcal or prepcaltrack). Look at who's back (hint: its McCandless and Franklin).

You all haven't heard? If you don't pay thousands of dollars for SAT tutoring and take the test in the heart of cross country season you won't get into any college.

Sometimes Taking the SAT's In the Heart of XC Season or Track is Better taking it When there is Championships going on in the End of the Season, Like Early November, December, May and June!

Some kids have to take the SAT a second (or third) time in order to get into the college they are targeting - whether they are going to run there or not.

So Anonymous @12:17, like Anonymous @8:29 insinuated, would you want the kids take the SAT now in the middle of the season to miss a weekend where not much is going on? Or would you want the kids to take the test in November and miss an important post-season meet such as league finals?

And no kid should ever put getting a chance at a higher education over a midseason cross country race, right?

The SAT is given the first Saturday of the month 10 months out of the year. Students can take it their junior year as well as their senior year.

The test itself is no indicator of anything else than how to take SAT's. The correlation to doing well in high school is the intensity of the testing environment as an equivalent to the rigor of a college course.

Doing home work, developing independent motivation, learning study habits and note-taking are all much better ways to succeed in college. Cross country promotes all of these and more.

This is not to say that the SAT is without value, but that the pressure we place on it is. And since the test is given frequently over the course of the year, a family could easily schedule it outside the season of sport.

Looking at the Boys and Girls times on the DO Invitational and DO 4000 over the past few years clearly demonstrates that the course is not static...and the distance/course has changed over the years. When a Chris Kigar record of 12:50's (top 10 State Meet) barely makes the top 10 at either meet three years later...hmmmm. I don't need my SAT math to know the course is shorter. I guess it really sucks for those that ran the longer course and had really outstanding times!

Really Peter. Looking at the SAT Schedule they are offered 7 times a year. 9 Months out of the Year. Looking also at Track and XC Schedules, They are offered a lot of times During the Important Part of the year. November 2 Championship Season Start, 1st Saturday in December (Footlocker and Nike Nationals). 1st weekend in May for the Beginning of Track and Field Championships and Usually State Meet Weekend for Track. So are 4 Important Dates especially for the Serious Runner. Also Some of the Test all depend on what Subject part they are Taking.

Agree with last post. If you take it once or twice in junior year and need a better score, you are going to have to take it in October of senior year. As much I agree with the SAT not being an indicator of how well you do in college, for admission it is heavily relied upon. And impossible to "schedule around" cross country and track season.

You missed the point. The pressure we place on students for this test is indeed absurd. The problem is the culture.

The Del Oro course has been exactly the same for every meet we have hosted. Only one person sets it up and that is me. The quality of the fields has led to the
faster times.

Well we could take the pressure off then where would they be sitting home at a community college definitely not running at the collegiate level. However, the reality is that success on the SATs is necessary to get to the next level.

but seriously guys, what happened to Fred Huxham?

I think he's just training well and saving his legs for the post season. He'll make an explosive debut in Clovis and then he'll definitely be on the list!

OMG Coach O check your ego at home. I have pictures of myself and teammates running closer to fences, and new structures on the course that were not there two years ago. Deceive yourself long enough and you will begin to believe it! This is about being honest with the runners! Glad I will never run for you!!

There is one stat that matters in cross country and track alike. Place.

The second is time. But will never be close to the most important stat, PLACE!

By the way, the State Meet course at woodward has also changed. The down hill coming off the pavement at 1.7 miles has been widened so the turn is not as sharp and actually cuts off distance. Should we now not count Baxter's record? Mt. Sac has also changed.

Course records are fun in cross country but should never be more than that. Courses degrade.

I would agree with those comments. When it comes to team, how you place is more important than team time (if you are into team time, then you may disagree).

Courses do change. Bob Rush has managed to keep the Crystal Springs course as close to the same as you can get since the early 70s but there have been some additions to the course that have made it faster such as the gravel and the widening of some areas.

Replying to my new buddy who has an issue with the Del Oro course: All the fences on our course are on the outside. Any pictures showing athletes closer to fences than previous years means those athletes ran further. The single new structure (the batting cage) added 8 meters since you must go around it. Every other structure/turn/road/gate/hill/straightaway/track/fence has remained exactly the same. Thanks for your concern and good luck with the rest of your season.

Thanks Coach O at DO. I knew that the course was longer 2 years ago as the cones you placed were closer to the fence a couple of years ago. I don't know how far 3-5 feet around 2 baseball outfields is in total distance but, I knew the course length had changed and you confirmed that.
