An amazing race, by incredible competitors. Not sure what the weather was like when German Fernandez set the record, but it heated up quite a bit by the time the D1 Boys hit the course at 11:00 AM. I was around the finish line for a lot of the races and there were a much higher number of kids collapsing at the line than is typically the case. With that said, Vernau and Grijalva went to the front in the first 100 yards and gapped the field within the first 1/4 mile. Clearly their spots at the state meet would be assured, even with an off day, but these two never shy away from competition or making a run at a record breaking mark. I know Vernau was bitterly disappointed in missing NXN by one spot last year, but did come back with a strong performance at Foot Locker Nationals. Willow Hills is a much different course than Woodward Park and if anything, I think could be more tailored to Grijalva. With that said, don't sleep on Vernau, he was only a couple of steps back yesterday and will leave it all out on the line at Woodward.
I know that Vernau has committed to Stanford. Any word on where Grijalva will be running next year?
I talked to him yesterday after the race and he said he was going to visit one more school and make a decision. Couldn't say who the finalist were, but that he was getting closer. With two weeks until the state meet, could be soon. But I also seem to recall Lalo Herrera of Madera South committing really late to Colorado. With some of the schools, they need to get academic approval before they can offer an athletic scholarship, not sure that is an issue here, but historically there are some really high ranking runners that declare late in the game, for any number of reasons.
Walt was really getting fired up! Great quality video as usual. Good luck to Jesuit at State.
I have no idea how Walt coaches and records these videos and what a beautiful setting for a section finals.
The person getting fired up was one of our assistant coaches videoing with his iPhone. We had 4 cameras going on the course with 4 different operators. I appreciate Albert embedding it on the blog.
Very well done video! I loved last year's as well with the drone over the reservoir. Did someone object to the drone or is it now restricted?
