Should be interesting to see how Fauria stacks up against the states top competition.

Not so sure about state's top competition but it should be her most competitive high school race to date. Also, will St. Francis, Sacramento run in their division or the seeded race?

Has St. Francis (SJS) confirmed for Stanford? Their schedule shows them doing the Capital Cross Challenge in Sacramento. I know Jesuit and Bellarmine are running two full teams at Stanford (first 7 in seeded race, second in D1 Race). Vernau of Davis is running the seeded race. Armijo doesn't have it on their schedule, so not sure about Grijalva. Bella Vista is going to be there, but not sure if they are running in seeded or not. I am interested to see if Teare and Barger are running up in the seeded race or as in last year, competing with their teams in their respective divisions (D5 and D4).

What an awful course. I wish they would utilize the new fairways created so they would do maybe a larger loop. I would hate this course for 8k. This and not rotating divisions.
The previous was posted by someone else. Had to edit.

when do we get a virtual meet for Stanford? Also, how can we get a better read from the teams on whether or not they are going to run their A team so we can get a real virtual meet? Neither SF nor Bell ran their A guys at RAM. One has to assume that will not be the case at Stanford and Clovis.

Jesuit and Bellarmine are running A and B teams at Stanford. Vernau is running open. I pick Vernau to win Open race, solely on the fact that he beat Grijalva handily at Lagoon Valley, and Grijalve beat Teare at the track meet down South last week. Additionally, Vernau is doing a visit with Stanford this weekend and as competitive as he is, I am sure there is nothing he would want more than to make a big impression in front of the Stanford team on Saturday. I am hopeful that Vernau, Teare and Bolger are running open at Stanford, but no confirmation until Wednesday. Going to be a little harder to predict the girls races as there are some strong freshman and a few of the big names from last year are still finding their stride this year. Bellarmine is not running Clovis (I assume they figure that the Mt. Sac trip will give them enough exposure to So Cal teams).

Virtual meets at ca.milesplit.com will be coming up this week before Friday.

Tears is running the seeded race, so I'm sure we will see some fast times there. I heard he is taking an official to Stanford after as well so we will see how the race plays out.

Albert, any idea when/if they will post individuals running in seeded race? I also didn't see St. Francis (SJS) on the start list, looks like they are running the Capital Cross Challenge in Sacramento. With the addition of Great Oaks, particularly on the girl's side, going to make for an interesting team competition. They are new teams, but any time you have the Davis and Great Oaks girls going at it, you are going to see a good race.

HAHAHAHA Sorry I joined the party fashionably late...Comment by Rob is too funny! Glad you're immediately doing wonderful things in CO (the Jim Harbaugh of HS XC :)!!!) We missed ya Bro. Also, it's been a long while since I actually looked forward to Stanford Invitational since it's so early in the season, but this year's should be indeed very exciting on the Boys side especially! No Virtual Meet necessary since again it's so early in the season...just watch the Meet! Good luck to all athletes! Conditions will be awesome!!!

I don't see St Joseph Notre Dame (C. Teare) listed in boys seeded or D5 races. Are they confirmed for the Stanford Invite?

Albert Caruana said...

I see St. Joseph is in the seeded race for the girls. I am not sure why their boys are not listed in either the Div V or seeded race.

St. Joe's has a girls team in seeded race and girls team in D4 race (not D5). No St Joe's boys teams listed.

No St Francis Sacramento either, too bad...

My guess is that is an entry/computer mistake; St. Joe's boys will be in seeded and girls in DV...that is my guess.

Anyone know why Richardson from Bellarmine is not running? With such a great field, can the top CCS teams: Bells, Paly, SF compete in the seeded race?

Albert Caruana said...

Matt Richardson ran his first race on Saturday at the Ram Invitational. He is slowly returning from an injury. I haven't looked at all the entries but it's possible he may not run as they ease him back in. Just because you are not entered doesn't mean you can't be switched in on meet day.

I have followed the top teams in the state the last few years and as much as Bellarmine would certainly benefit from a healthy Matt Richardson, they can compete just fine with what they've got. Even without him they would be my pick to win the seeded the race, with him (if all their other top runners stay healthy), they could make a run at one of the top spots at the state podium and an invitation to NXN. Yes, they have the potential to be that good. Great Oak is coming up and they have incredible depth, but not quite the front end they did last year. Dana Hills is another massive school with scores of top notch runners, but I wouldn't be shocked if the D1 boys state title comes home to NorCal this year.

Have the parking directions always directed to the structure off Oak Road? Seems like quite a walk. In past years I was able to park on Searsville Road, is that no longer an option?

Albert Caruana said...

Tim,
I am not sure. I know there are buildings up now that weren't there before. The link I posted for directions and parking may be a bit dated.

With the weather expected, I anticipate Vernau taking out at a blistering pace and challenging anybody to keep up. Teare and Bolger do have the speed to hang, but my money is on Vernau for the win. At the moment, Bellarmine appears to be about 5 deep, until Richardson gets back to his expected level of fitness. So either, Bellarmine's top 5 all run great races or the Great Oak freight train gets the win. Feeling that the Bells have more top end speed and have the depth and quality of runners to run with any team in the state when all is said and done. One the girl's side it looks like the top two teams in the state from last year will go at it again, with Davis and Great Oak meeting in the seeded race. Flip a coin on this one, but I'll let my NorCal roots show and go with the Blue Devils for the win.

Bellarmine has a league meet the following Wednesday and then Serra Invite next Saturday. With three tough races in 8 days it might be prudent to sit one or two races out.

Bellarmine will not win or get a bid to NXN. They are damn good but this state is just insane.

Time to ask the question again: with so many races in October, do you have your kids jog their league meets to save themselves for the invites?

Albert Caruana said...

First of all, I am assuming the league meets do not count toward the final standings. If they don't, then you certainly have that option as a coach. I think the amounts of races and the effort put forth by the students is up to the coach. There are plenty of successful teams that race a lot and plenty of successful teams that race sparingly. You just have to figure out what is right for your team.

Rob Collins said...

Very good answer Albert and I completely agree with you. With me living and Coaching in Colorado now, I've enjoyed of not having League meets and just focusing on Invites and being able to have options for the kids to race or sit out and train. If your meets don't count towards something it gives the other kids (Younger) the opportunity to race Varsity and gain the experience. We have done that now a few times. We have also done that with our younger runners also, eventually by doing the same (Varsity, JV and FS) to your younger runners it also gives them confidence and experience and eventually great depth down the road. Two things as a coach you are working on. You have plan A (Your main Varsity) and then Plan B (Your Future Team). Next it gives you a great training period for your Varsity athletes to train, focus and rest for either small and big meets and aim for the big goal, your Championship season either its your League, Section, State or anything above that, but overall you need to do what is best for you and your program based on your requirements through your league. Correct me if I'm wrong though in CCS you are required to run at least in 50% of your league meets to compete in the Championship season. Good luck this year!

Albert Caruana said...

Rob, thanks for sharing. It's great to see you continuing to be a part of a successful team in another state.

That is correct that in CCS, you have to participate in 50% of your league meets to be eligible for CCS. Coaches can petition for their athletes if there were circumstances that prevented their athletes from participating such as injuries. However, participation doesn't dictate effort so teams can determine how hard their athletes compete during their league meets.
