Nice to see Kathryn Loken from Del Campo pulling off a repeat at Willow Hills, and taking a 1st place win again in Div 2! It'll be interesting to see what she'll do at State.

It's interesting that Victor Santamaria said it wasn't his team's best day at CCS finals. It seemed that WG did very well. Which WG runners were "off" from what was expected? Pretty cool to know that WG could potentially beat SF at the state finals.

The SF-WG battle goes south. Rich Gonzalez has them ranked 8 and 9 respectively in D2, and the only non-SS teams in the top 10. It would be great if they both could move up and show what kind talent we have in the CCS.

You can look at the times of the Willow Glen runners at their league finals compared to their times at CCS to see if some of the runners didn't run as well at CCS.

As for Division 2 at state, the Southern Section dominates this division. Most of our Division 2 sized schools compete in Division 1 which means we have Division 3 schools compete in Division 2. I would probably guess that both St. Francis and Willow Glen would be in Division 3 if they were in the Southern Section.

Until CIF balances the divisions based on school size as opposed to letting the each section determine their own divisions, we will have the same situation.

Why can't we split the state in half and be done with the south? They take our water and game the XC championship. Let's bring everyone to CS from Monterey on up and let the south spend their Thanksgiving weekend in Fresno.

Albert, the 5 WG scorers went (league final to CCS) -8, +13, -18, -2, and -5. Even if the #2 ran the same time as league, SF still would have won 60 to 62. A 20 second improvement seems pretty good - I guess it is the coach's job to motivate his team for the next race, but in no way did they underperform at CCS.

If either team had an off day it was SF that went +26, 1-5. They went -5, -2, +10, -3, and + 26 (different runner). What, if anything, does that mean to the battle down under (in Fresno)?

@6:35 It means it could go either way.

As much as my son's school is handicapped by the SJS, forcing them to compete against SS schools with 1.5 to 3 times as many students as they have, but I don't blame Southern California, it's not their fault the CIF allows sections to make their own rules. There just needs to be consistency so that teams compete on a level playing field.

You know, I like the idea of splitting the state into a Northern and Southern California for the state championships, but let's take it one step further. Why don't we give each individual section their own state championship? That way divisional enrollment standards would be perfectly equal for both the sectional AND state championship meets, while giving no section a competitive advantage based on enrollment for the state meet! Yay, no more controversy over whether the Southern Section has an unfair advantage or not!

Does the Battle Down Under help or hurt both teams? They could be spurred on to better results (4, 5?) against the SS teams or concentrate so hard on each other that they slip to outside the top 10. Intrasection rivalry - help or hurt at State?

It's always so interesting how XC meets end up... WG actually had its top 5 guys finish before Saint Francis' 5th, but of course still lost. Suffice it to say, SF and WG are among the most closely matched teams in all of CCS (aside, of course, from the 2 ties with Crystal Springs!)

@11:49 Looking at the Lynbrook predictions that are based on current section finals, WG would finish all 5 before SF's again (that's assuming SF's regular #5 doesn't have a bounce back effort) but will lose by a wider margin. The issue is that even though WG has a -2 for the first 2 finishers, their 3-5 are +18 for a 16 point deficit. That is likely to grow as the other sections get entered into the database. It is not impossible for them to make up the gap but their 3-5 will have to run big PR's to do it. The 'Battle Down Under' is going to be the hottest ticket in town!
