Jesuit boys got a bad deal. Only teams to beat them all year at any race was Great Oak and Dana Hills, who were awesome today. They took 4 boys teams from Utah alone. Glad they made the podium today, but they should be running next week too. Small revenge, won't be buying any Nike gear for awhile.............

Congrats to the top individual girls and Davis for making it to NXN. What a great showing from Northern CA. Davis was so close to upsetting Great Oak. Would have been sweet. And Bella Vista gave a good showing against Saugus. Saugus arrived in their limo with their 10 trophies--that was a bit over the top. What an exciting weekend. Such hard work from these kids.

It seems like this NXN selection committee is as transparent as a brick wall, nobody seems to know who is on it or,why teams are rewarded for being 4th in their region when a top 3 team in California is passed over. First time California hasn't had an at large team in a year when team time records were broken. A bummer to see boys who have dreamed of making it not get a chance to compete. Of course, this takes nothing away from the awesome performances of the teams and individuals who got the auto qualifications.

It looks like the biggest problem for the non-automatic qualifying California teams was how far back they were from the top 2. Yes, the top 2 for both genders are all among the best in the country, but the gap made it more difficult to justify selecting at-large teams from California when there were teams in other regions that were already ranked nationally ahead of Jesuit/Loyola/Arcadia/Saugus and finished very close to automatically qualifying.

MileSplit did a speed rating of NXN qualifiers and who do you suppose finished 1 and 2? Great Oak and Dana Hills! Looking at the numbers, it's clear that at least a couple of at large teams would have been gapped further back than California teams. You have to wonder if the official CIF Rich Gonzalez power rankings had Jesuit ranked above teams from his beloved Southern Section that they had beaten and beat again yesterday, would their national ranking be above the 17th national ranking they went in to the meet with? The things we are sure if is that Richnhas his auto qualifier for an all expense paid trip to NXN and nobody knows who this committee is and what criteria they use to make their selections. Not the least bit transparent of a process. So, the year CA has two of the fastest 7' teams in history, they don't rate an at large berth?

"So, the year CA has two of the fastest 7' teams in history, they don't rate an at large berth?"

That has nothing to do with whether the other California teams deserve the at large berths. The comparison has to be made with the other eligible teams in the other regions. If you want to argue that Jesuit is a stronger candidate that the teams that were selected for at large berths, then that's the correct debate.

I didn't notice the gap between the first 2 teams and the next 4 teams (all around 300+ points). The committee is looking for stand out teams and since so many were bunched at around 300 points, it would be hard to discern one amongst another especially since the average team time was pretty much the same between 3rd through 6th.

If Jesuit or Canyon or Madera South were around 200 points, then they would have gone.

I don't think you can say Rich Gonzalez has anything to gain about being biased against NorCal runners. He is capably organizing the USATF Region 14 XC championships at Fresno today which is for all runners in Northern Calfornia north of Fresno.

California State Meet is more competitive than any HS race in the nation, including NXN. CA should get 4 team qualifiers every year hands down.

Who elected Rich to do this? I think NorCal has to take the power back and elect their own person. Consolidated power is never good.
