Wow! Top 3 places for CCS in the girls 1600m. Has that ever happened before?

How about 4 out of 6 on the medal stand! That is even better.

So, after 102 degree sweltering heat, high pollen count, little shade.. will CIF consider another venue??? Heat may be good for a sprinter but wow! what weekend.

Well, there has been extreme heat at both Cerritos and Sacramento in the past as well. Buchanan has other advantages: central location, incredible support staff, and I believe that they don't charge CIF for use of the facility.

4x4 video? I want to see that 3:13 by Amador Valley

I swear I've noticed a pattern amongst boys CCS 3200 meters each year. You always have that one really fast guy who everyone looks up to who does great his junior year in the state 3200, but then does terribly his senior year. Let me show you what I mean:

-Lance Wolfsmith: junior year gets 14th at state meet, senior year gets 28th at state meet (fifth to last)

-Garrett Rowe: junior year gets 4th at state meet, senior year gets 26th at state meet (6th to last)

-Kevin Bishop: junior year gets 12th at state meet, senior year gets 27th at state meet (last place)

-and now Yohaness Estifanos: junior year gets 6th at state meet, senior year gets 20th at state meet (7th to last)

Are we cursed or something?

Could it be injury?

Or could it be an attitude amongst these runners of "f%#$ it, I'm already signed up to run this fall at [insert name here] university. it's not like i'm gonna be kicked off the team if i don't try"?

Don't add fuel to my fire anonymous. Miguel Vasquez would have brought his A game to the 3200 had he not been disqualified at BVAL finals.

He would've much rather ran the 3200 m than the 800 m, (an event that he's not really comfortable with).

He would've tripled at CCS, then drop the 800, and then Cody Johnson would've had a chance to run the 800.

He would have gone sub nine.

In defense of Estifanos, he did double this year and made the finals of the 1600.

Anonymous said...

Anyone else curious why Estifanos doubled instead of focusing on the 3200 where he possibly could have medaled?

Congratulations to Anna Maxwell on a gutsy race.

Hiltz sure closed well in 1600m!

-Anyone complaining about Clovis never went to the meet when it was at Cerritos. VM Stadium is a palace, and we're fortunate to have such a facility for the meet.

-How about the Piedmont Hills girls winning the 4x4, the first CCS women's team to ever do so! (and only the second CCS team ever!)

-Estifanos didn't double last year, and two races in that heat before the 3200 likely took a little wind out of his sails. I too was surprised he took on the double.

-It's fun to speculate on what Vasquez might have done in the 3200, but c'mon, 4:08 for second, in his third race of the weekend? That's incredible, and it's silly to be anything but thrilled for him.

Checking the splits in the girl's 1600. Anna Maxwell ran the first 400m almost 7 seconds faster than last years first lap. (Won by Hiltz in 4:42.43?) A gutsy gamble that took the kick out Hiltz, Robinson, Shanahan & Segal.

"A gutsy gamble that took the kick out Hiltz, Robinson, Shanahan & Segal."

I wouldn't say it took the kick out of them as they all closed on Maxwell in the last lap. If the other girls had gone with her and then had nothing in the last lap, then that's taking the kick out. It's more like she made it so that the kick didn't matter.

I should have said, "Took SOME of the kick out of..." Last year Nikki Hiltz ran the last lap in 1:06.21, this year 1:10.59. That's more than 4 seconds! Maxwell going out in 1:05.56 pulled Nikki through the first lap in 1:07.86 as opposed to 1:12.20 last year. If Maxwell had run the first lap 4-5 seconds slower I believe Nikki and maybe Sarah Robinson would have beaten her. Watch the 3200 video and see how Segal closed on Anna the last 100.

Having watched Nikki and Anna race each other for the last three years in the SCCAL and seeing how Nikki(after missing many months recovering from an injury)has gradually improved all season: I think that Anna ran the race in the only way she could have, on that particular day, and won. She probably had a one to three second window on that first lap -any faster and she may have crashed and burned, any slower Nikki would have caught her.

Congratulations to Anna - 1600 Champion. The CCS girls left it all on the Track in the 1600 as evidenced by their later performances and testimony. They raced each other at Stanford, SCCAL, CCS and STATE. The results were all the same. This was the race that mattered most to those girls. The were amazing - yeh for CCS. Case Closed. Time to move on.

I don't think Nikki would have caught her if they had started slower. Maxewell has run 2:09 for 800, and despite what the announcers thought, she was the favorite in the race. Her 4:42 was by far the fastest time coming in. Nikki had a great season after the injury, but 4:47 was a season best, and I don't think she's out kicking Anna this year. After the first 800, no one was catching her, and she pretty much cruised to a victory possibly saving a little for a tough 3200 later on that night.

Nikki ran 4:44.93 at the CCS championship meet.

Why not Cal's facility in Berkeley?

So, 8:48AM has declared the Case Closed and it's time to move on. I haven't read anything negative about either Nikki, Anna or Sarah. Anna was praised for gambling and running a gutsy race, Nikki and Sarah for running their best. I don't think they can receive too much attention and praise for such great seasons. And what about Clare Peabody and Danielle Katz!!! They've gotten a little lost in the shadows of the top three CCS stars. Peabody broke 4:50 for the 1600 earlier in the season and made the State 1600 final. Danielle finished sixth at State. I wonder if any other section has ever had that type of depth in the1600. Then there's Vanessa Fraser and Vanessa Estrada. WHAT A SEASON!

Not to mention 2 Freshman who ran sub 10:50 this season. How many times has a girl run sub 11 and not made State in CCS history? There were 4 this year alone. We even had 2 BVAL girls make the 800 final. Kylie Goo was definitely "State" good too. Tough year to be a lady and get to State. Great year for a personal best.
That Top 100 list is taking a beating.

To:8:55AM-I know that Anna Maxwell was the favorite in the State
1600. She hadn't lost to a Ca girl all season and deserved to be the favorite despite what the uninformed announcers had to say about Nikki Hiltz being the overwhelming favorite. However, you are mistaken about stating that Nikki didn't have a chance to catch Anna in the last 800. Anna ran her 2:09.34 at the Top 8. It was her only race of the day. Nikki doubled at CCS running 2:09.50 after having run 4:44.93 in the 1600. I'm not taking anything away from Anna, who is obviously one of the top High School distance runners in the Country, I'm just saying that Nikki would have had a shot at her (Anna) if the first 400 had not been so insane. Anna's gamble paid off and she deserves to be The State Champ, but Nikki and Sarah Robinson are also two of the top runners in the USA. If Sarah Robinson runs x-country this year it will be interesting to see her and Anna battling it out. Clare Peabody is just a junior, so she could be in the fray also. She had the fourth fastest 1600 in the State this year.

Nikki's State double was 7 weeks after Top 8. Who's to say Maxwell doesn't run 2:07 if she runs the 800 at State. Who's to say she doesn't run 2:06 at Top 8 if she had competition. You're making it sound like Nikki ran 2:05 and Maxewell 2:14. I think it's wrong for everyone to say that this was the only way she could have one. If they had run a 70 first lap, I think Anna would have pounded them in lap 3. No one taking anything away from Nikki or Robinson, but No one was beating Maxewell in the 1600 this year.

No one is putting down Anna Maxwell! just acknowledging her achievement and talent. You seem to think that recognizing her ability to go out in 1:05.56 in 98 degree temperature against a quality field and still win is somehow a put down!
An interesting note on the depth of this years 1600 CCS girls, of the previous 39 CCS championships:
2-Hiltz 4:44.93 1st in 38 of 39
3-Robinson 4:48.41 1st in 37 of 39
4-Peabody 4;53.63 1st in 27 of 39
5-Katz 4:55.03 1st in 24 of 39
(I hope there is someone else out there as into the stats as I am)

As for why Yohaness didn't do well at State this year - in both the 1600 and 3200, he ran in lane 3 the whole time. Of course you don't want to get boxed in, but when you make the decision to run in lane 3 the whole race, you add way too much distance to your race and it's impossible to run a good time. He needed to find his way to lane 1, whether it be in front of the pack or behind the pack.

Not to mention the fact that he was fresh in the 3200 last year at State, and this year was not fresh for the 3200.
