I covered the SJS for MileSplit and while all who qualified for the state meet deserve congratulations, a few efforts really stood out. My research puts McClatchy Junior Anna McNatt's 17:27 the second fastest girls time in Willow Hills history, behind only the legendary Fiona O'Keeffe's 16:57. Another long time record at Willow Hills is German Fernandez's 15:03 scorcher back in 2007, while only Luis Grijalva and Michael Vernau have come close to it (their epic duel in 2016 resulted in 15:09 and 15:10 finishes), Zachary Ayers of Davis Senior High slotted in just behind Matt Strangio on the all time list with his 15:28 finish, becoming one of only 6 athletes to dip below 15:30 on the challenging 5k course. It also looks like Sonora Freshman Broen Holman, who finished along with his Senior teammate Adin Dibble, became the all-time fastest freshman with his 15:41 time, good enough for top 15 all time.

Both Vacaville on the boys side and Granite Bay on the girls side had the top 1-5 compressions, which left them as the top teams after the merge. Del Oro's Riley Chamberlain won her 3rd section title and will be going for her 3rd state championship in Fresno.
