Comparing times from Woodbridge and Newhall? That makes no sense.
I am not comparing those courses. I was going to just list the top 10 Woodbridge times but other times from other courses popped up among the fastest times in Woodbridge so I listed them as well. I think we can all agree that Matt Strangio and Christopher Middleton-Pearson are the two best XC runners in NorCal.
I appreciate you doing this Coach. While taking nothing away from the accomplishments of all the runners and teams at Woodbridge, I am not comfortable with calling Young's performance a national record. In cross country we have course records, because how many great runners from the past had the opportunity to run on a pancake flat, well groomed course, during the coolest time of the day, with the best competition? It's apples and oranges, but both are worthy of recognition.
Cross Country courses can only be compared to themselves from year to year or within a season. There is no question that the Woodbridge course is a wicked fast 3 mile course and there is just nothing like it at all. I think all anybody can say is that Nico Young ran the fastest 3 mile time ever and that is impressive enough. He ran 8:40.00 on the track so he is super talented and I think by the end of the year, you can put him up against any of the all-time greats.
I think by the end of the year, you can put him up against any of the all-time greats. Then wait until the end of the year to do so. It's September a lot can happen as the season goes on.
Will do. As always, we have some great runners in California and I will be rooting for them to succeed in and out of state.
Another wildcard runner I have not previously heard about is Alexandra Klos from Vista Del Lago. She went 18:40 on the difficult Willow Hills 5k course (Riley Chamberlain went 19:00 there the following week, to put things in perspective).
Apparently her main sport is soccer and has already verbally committed to Santa Barbara. No XC experience, other than a good program at Vista with Coach Grove.
It always makes me wonder, because XC is not very technical, is it the only sport where well-conditioned athletes from other sports can cross over and compete at a high level?
Any truth to the rumor that they are putting down a Mondo surface in an effort to make the Woodbridge course faster?
A lot of former soccer players become distance runners, but I haven't found it to be true for athletes of other sports (maybe swimmers where aerobic capacity is a key to success). Matt Strangio, just to name one, is a former soccer player who has transitioned in to a pretty good runner.
I would think that the mondo surface is just a rumor. 13:39 wasn't fast enough?
