Recap of the Dublin Distance Fiesta

You can find that recap at this LINK. Also included are the sombrero races as well as lots of interviews with some of the top athletes from the meet.

You can also find more videos from the meet courtesy of Jesuit coach, Walt Lange at this LINK.

If you were at the meet, what do you feel was the best race of the day? Biggest surprise? Most impressive performance? Anything else?

First of all congrats to all the volunteers and organizers for putting on another first class event! I was impressed by all the competitors, but highlight for me include Brewer and Friedman putting on quite a show in the 800 and having three Cross Country All Americans racing for the win in the Boy's 3,200. I didn't see the DMRs, but understand there was a good finish there as well.

Big kudos to Chris Williams for running a first class meet and attracting so many teams from different sections to attend year after year.

Carlmont had quite the performance in both the DMR and the mile heats. I believe their DMR is #1 in CA right now, isn't it? Regardless that finish was very close and I can't wait to see all the DMR teams compete at Stanford or Arcadia. The boys 3200m was pretty impressive as well. The competition in the 3200 is pretty solid this season and I can't wait to see how fast state ends up being. My question for Albert and everyone else is...What runners do you think are being slept on so far this season that may be dark horses in upcoming big meets?

Any reason why the boys sombrero heat competitors were introduced (in the 1600, at least - had to leave after the 16s were over), but not the girls? Last year, the boys 3200 was announced as the "premier event of the night!" but the girls 32 was not. Are the girls chopped liver? Maybe just an oversight, but easily corrected for next year....

There were introductions for the girls sombrero heats in both the 800 and 3200. I wasn't there for the 1600.

New announcer this year. It definitely was not intentional and after the girls 1600, all the premier event athletes were all introduced, boys and girls.

Dark horses for big upcoming meets? Tough to say, in California talent is so deep, it's rare to see someone come out of nowhere. In the Boy's 3,200 I see it pretty wide open, but would probably put Justin Hazell as the slight favorite, followed by a pack including (but not limited to), Anderson, Carvajal, Ullrich, Strangio, Miranda and Mota. With Strangio being only a sophomore, as good as he is, he's still making significant improvements pretty frequently. On the girl's side, Claudia Lane is a pretty towering figure, but I am thinking that if Maddy Denner can stay healthy and chose to focus on one event, she could definitely close the gap in the 3,200. Coming out of Dublin, I am very high on Mari Friedman (doesn't take a genius), but with her closing speed, could make a run at a state title in the 16 or give Brewer everything she can handle in the 800. At this point, she wouldn't be a favorite in either race, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see her with a medal around her neck come the state meet.

Dan, I think you hit most of the top runners in multiple events. I would add Mariah Castillo, Fatima Cortes, Haley Herberg and Olivia O'Keeffe in 1600. I think there are many contenders across the board in all distance events but many are still trying to figure out which is their best event. Take Gillian Wagner of Redwood and Mari Friedman of Santa Cruz. They can contend in all three races but will have to choose the event that gives them the best chance for the highest finish.

I think we will know who are the true contenders in the next couple of weeks with the Azusa meet, Stanford, Arcadia and down the road Mt. SAC.

Good points Albert. What about the 800m? On the boys side, I would say, Charvet, Scales, Medrano and Gomez. For girls, Mari Freedman and Alyssa Brewer are safe bets. Is there anyone that you think should be added to these lists?

After this weekend Ryan Wilson (Carlmont) should be in the conversation for all distance events.

I would add Colonna, and JP Garcia to dark horse 1600m, and McKenzie to the dark horse 3200m.

Cathilyn McIntosh (Del Oro) will be in the mix in the girls 800M. She is recovering from slight injury early in the season but she should be ready soon.

The introductions for the girls sombrero 1600 were scratched as the meet was running slightly behind.

Jorge Estrella will be a factor as well. Don't forget he was a state finalist last year and gave Scales all he could handle at the CCS final in the 1600.

Jorge is no dark horse. He will be a factor in the 1600 and possibly the 3200 if he runs both. When do the Stanford and Arcadia entries come out?

Albert Caruana said...

I didn't say he was a dark horse. He is always under the radar since he doesn't run any of the high profile meets and people forget about him.

Agreed. The thread was going that way but you did not list Jorge as a dark horse. To your point, he was listed to run in the 1600m at KBell but did not run. That would have been a great race to have him in.

-Stanford Accepted Entries out today 5PM, they are a bit behind schedule...
-Arcadia Accepted Entries not out until next week since the deadline to update marks is this Sunday 3/25 2PM...

In regards to State title contenders, looking at early marks I would say that no one in the distance events (800, 1600, 3200) is a clear shoe-in winner since Lane might double having Denner contending (1600/3200); Brewer has Friedman (800); Boys 800 have a few contenders (Scales, Charvet,Medrano, Gomez, etc); Boys 1600 also have a few including Anderson and Estrella; and Boys 3200 including MBR, Ullrich, Strangio, Hazell, and more...

In CCS, it's also the same story except for Girls 800: Boys 800 - Scales, Gomez; Boys 1600 - Estrella, Scales, Colonna, Wilson; Boys 3200 - MBR, Miranda, Estrella, Colonna, Saul, Mederias, etc...Girls 800 - Mari Friedman clear winner, if she could possibly run all 3 distance events, she would hands down win all 3 in CCS...she's always been a force and I've always been a huge fan of hers. Girls 1600 & 3200 - up for grabs...in the 1600 no one has broken 5:00 yet, nor 11:00 in the 3200 (usually by now you would see some CCS girls already under those marks) other than Friedman (4:48 casually at a league dual a few days after running a 10:28 at Wildcat)...Oregon State is very lucky to have her next Fall.

Best wishes to all!!! Go NorCal Distance running!!!

Estrella was a 800/1600 guy last year. I know he was the fastest runner at CCS cross but why is everyone assuming he drops the 800 for the 3200?

Meika could win 3200 at State. He is definitely the favorite for CCS. For the boys 8/16 it is not clear yet.
