No doubt it is the VB 1600m. 6 guys under 4:20, 9 guys 4:24 or better! Wow!
Definitely a loaded field for an early season meet. A mini CCS preview!
Wow the 1600 is loaded. How many guys will be in each heat?
I am sure the fields in the distance events will be large. I am sure there are lots of boys in the 1600 who will want to be in the fastest heat.
I love the KBell as an early invite that combines great heats (did anyone see the boys varsity 1600, wow!) with developmental heats that keep newcomers interested in our great sport. But the lights literally went out on the boys varsity 4x400 tonight and there is no excuse for that. Once again the meet ran way behind schedule because they filled the heats with kids who, frankly, have no business on that track. My suggestion is to limit the 200m races so they can come close to the schedule, or move the 200s to the end of the meet and go home when the lights get turned out on the kids who can’t finish that distance in 2:00. Please, let sanity prevail next year!
A few notes re The K-Bell:
First: Thanks to all the Kiwanians, parents, alum parents, and students who volunteered to make the meet a success!!
Second, a huge thank you shout out to all the coaches from other schools who chipped in all day in so many ways: St. Francis, Sacred Heart Prep, Los Gatos, Valley Christian, Serra, SJCC, SI, Westmont, etc....your enthusiasm and support was tremendous!!
Third: Like everyone else who was there at the end of the meet, I share your frustration that the lights went out--26 minutes before they were supposed to contractually!--and I am very sorry that the Varsity 4x400 was cancelled. That was my call. There was no way for any of us at BCP or even the LG staff that was still there to turn on the lights, and it was not safe to run in the dark with the rail on the track. I know it would have been a great race!!
Fourth: Athletes of the meet: Girls: Hawa Kamara, Leigh, with an impressive 56.97/400 39-5/TJ double win!! Boys: Alex Scales wining the 1600 in 4:16.88 by .03 (over hard charging Junior Colton Colonna St. F!!)
Fifth, anyone who has any ideas for an alternate site, let me know! The current LGHS facilities rules have made running an all day meet on campus more difficult that in years past, though we did our best to get the meet up and running after 8:00 AM.
Sixth, please remember two things: The meet is a fundraiser for charities--eg, not one penny goes to the BCP athletic department--and the meet is and will always be as long as I am coach an early season meet in which all athletes can compete! It is impacted, but we all know that going in! Still some great competition up and down the meet.
Patrick, great meet as always. Sorry you had to deal with the light issue. You made the only call you could. I think you could resolve a lot of the schedule frustrations people have by running the premier races (1 or 2 heats each of the 2,4,8,16,32) at specific times in the middle of the day and do more of the developmental stuff that causes such havoc before and after those premier races. Best of both worlds. I think you should see if Stanford would allow use of their facility. Generally they are at indoors at this time. They should like the fact that the proceeds go to charity.
Thank you, Patrick. I don't put much stock into complaints made by people who won't include their names with their posts. I do however appreciate your comment above. When looking at the meet as a whole, some outstanding efforts all around.
I do remember the lights going out at a CCS Top 8 meet at Los Gatos. I always assumed that was the power going out then but maybe not?

Scales and Colonna 57..8 last lap!!!
Thanks for another wonderful day at the track. The races were fantastic. If you watch the VB 1600 tape you see the infield crowded with a bunch of kids in slower heats. They love the sport and they get to see the best. The enthusiasm is contagious and the track meets are for the kids. We were there 13 hours yesterday and every minute was worth it; I love that all of our athletes get to compete and fight to do their individual best. Thanks for all the hard work and contributions to the greater track community.
What's a "tape"?
