Ended up being 3.7 miles rather than 5K

What? I could get closer going for a run without looking at a watch. How could this be?

They had to change the course due to, "bees that were stinging people," and they made it alot longer. I originally heard 3.7 at the meet, it sounds like an online measurement put it at 3.5 (I guess they didn't roll it out) but that doesn't sound right.

Yeah, Richard Ho running 18 isn't a 5k but not 3.7 either. That would put him in 14 flat 5k pace. Bummer.

I've found kids prefer a 2.8 or 2.9 course to a longer one just because the faster time seems better (even though its not).

I believe the course was measured at 3.5 which sounds right based on the times.

An 18 minute 3.7 mile run means going through the 5K around 15:05, NOT 14 flat. Fail.

The high school course had to be changed right at the start of the high school races when the middle school kids got stung quite a bit for their 2 mile races... Unfortunately, it was a last minute change and the meet director quickly came up with a new course that was never measured before the race started. So, we had no idea how far the kids were running. Once the first race finished we realized the course was quite long. The decision was made to keep it at that distance. The bike leading the race measured it at 3.75 miles on his phone but we later realized that that was not accurate with the times we saw. So, an online measurement gave us 3.56 miles. The meet director is wheeling it today and I can post it later if I hear...
Regardless of distance... some things are clear... Aptos girls and Madera South Boys are the real deal! Richard Ho and Vanessa Estrada are also quite the runners!
Thanks!
