"World Record" attempt this Thursday at the Los Gatos All-Comer meet

According to an anonymous poster below, Jeremy Kain ran 4:35.4. A pretty good time for a 13-year-old about to start high school in a month or so.
=================
This Thursday at 6pm, Jeremy Kain (center in photo to the left) of Scotts Valley will be attempting to set another unofficial world record in the mile. Last year as a 12-year-old, Jeremy set a new record with a time of 4:36.80. You can read about his attempt last year as well as watch a video of that race at this LINK. You can also find a link to all the world age group records in that article if you are interested.

The current record for 13-year-olds is 4:29.0 which was set by Andrew Barnett in 1969.

This will be the 5th LGAC meet of the season. You can find results of the previous four meets at this LINK.

Also, as posted below, there is another world record holder in Northern Californis, Daniel Skandera. In fact Daniel has broken 34 world records including a 4:53.4 mile as a 10 year old. BAREFOOT! You can read more about Daniel in this LINK.

Bet you a dollar he ends up at Bellarmine on scholarship

You owe me a dollar, Family friend! He is going to Scott's Valley along with his sister. They live 2 Miles away from SV and 25 miles (plus traffic time) away from Bellermine.

Students and families are free to choose wherever they want to attend. Jeremy was accepted to Bellarmine but is choosing to compete for his local school.

There are no track/XC scholarships in HS. Being a good athlete and well rounded person can help get you in but, once again, nobody gets any money to go to a private school because of their ability to run, period!

I teach and coach at a private school and agree with the sentiment above. While being a very fast runner may be a big deal to people involved in the running community, it's a very small factor when it comes to an admission committee filling out a freshman class.

I will be very interested to see how he does in high school. I have seen so many child phenoms drift ride off into the sunset after freshmen year.

Like who? Name a local sub 4:40 8th grader who rode off into the sunset after freshman year.

It’s not the meets or the record attempts that leads to burnout, it’s the training. If he is doing this on 20-30 miles per week, he will be fine going into HS. If he is already up to 35+ in MS for the purpose of breaking some cool but otherwise meaningless records, then I would be concerned. You have to hope that he has the proper coaching and motivation. You know he will get that from his HS coach in a few months.

Jeremy will likely stay sharp thru HS. His club team is raced him vary sparingly.

So, a year later he improves by .04 from age 12 to 13?
And when does he turn 14?

According to a Facebook post by his parents on their business site (Kain Performance Multi Sport Racing), he ran 4:35.4. The post also says he is going to take another shot at the record on August 2. I understand that he will turn 14 a few days after that.

As for his future in the sport, he may be an Olympian or he may peak at 4:20s in high school or somewhere in between -- only time will tell. I get that people react negatively to the overhyping of middle school runners because there's absolutely no guarantee that 4:36 for a mature and well-trained 12 year old is going to lead to 3:48 at age 24. In fact, it's unlikely just because statistically it's unlikely for anyone (not a knock on Jeremy, he may be that one in a million). But it's also a little disappointing to see the negative predictions that seem to come out whenever a young runner puts up a fast time. People should just appreciate good running and sit tight on both the optimistic and pessimistic projections. Good luck to him to whatever level he attains.

Did he have a rabbit? Last year I think he had Alex Scales lead him out. Not a bad way to try for a record!

Alex Scales paced him again this year.

I would prefer to look at this way. Jeremy established a world record in the mile as a 12 year old. That is amazing and only very few people in the world get to establish world records. Nobody knows what is going to happen in the future and I would think the majority of us would like for him to continue to succeed. Best of luck to him.

I am a Bay Area XC “insider” if you would, & JK will end up 6th in the Scotts Valley roster + likely would have seen a 5th spot w/ the Bells. His performance on the 2nd is sorta a make or break moment; his times are starting to plateau although after talking w/ sources in the Area he only runs about 7-11 miles a week, including next to no speed work. I ran the numbers through an algorithm I developed for XC times and project his fresh 5k @ 16’35” + a 15’22” senor 5k.

Good to hear that his mileage is low. There is a lot of upside, and burnout is not likely. Good luck to Jeremy and his team this season.
