Who was most impressive? Biggest surprise today? Who are in contention for state championships tomorrow? Most competitive event? Most anticipated event?

I am going to open up the comments so that you can post them right away. Please be kind.

Jocelyn Budwing had a MONSTER final throw (174 feet) to move her to #3 in US.

Jada Hicks also with a blazing fast 100m hurdle race moving her to #2 in US.

Finals should be exciting

Great to see McIntosh back in girls 800M. 2:07.6 is great, especially since she wasn’t really pushed. She ran a late season 55sec 400M, so it seems that her closing speed has returned.

Brewer, no show?

Alyssa Brewer is injured and had to skip the state meet.

Wishing her a speedy recovery and best wishes for a successful collegiate career at USC.

Is paying $30 to Flotrack the only way to watch tonight's finals?? If that's the case, though I don't mind supporting the CIF and the schools, I assume that only a small fraction of the $30 would go to them so I won't be paying it.

Was surprised at Alex Scales not being able to compete in the 1600. Does anyone know if he Is injured/ ill?

Anonymous said...

@3:49pm. Scales ran 4:25 in the first heat and didn't qualify for the finals. Don't know if sick or injured or just an off day. It happens.

2:45 It's very sad that they chose to do it this way.

Hey Coach Small, your 95 degree streak barely made it.

Matt Strangio!!!

Matt Strangio, who really saw that coming tonight, mean really? What an upset. Mad props dude!

NorCal XCTF really represented well tonite!!! Sweeping all distance events! From Denner Sweep w/ Olivia & STRANGIO wins in the 3200, Denner and Anderson win in the 1600, and McIntosh & GOMEZ wins in the 800! We can safely say that NorCals' distance had a dominating day on top of the podium.

Another untold story that will be lost in this blog forever, not surprisingly SC's MARI FRIEDMAN, after Charlotte got tripped up on the start of the 800M, Mari came up to her immediately to make sure she was ok, and plus talked her UP to get her going again. Kids like Mari only come about once in a blue moon...An Amazing role model and ambassador for our sport just like her coach...Menlo will be cheering for her as she goes through her college career because we know she'll do great things on and off the Track for Oregon State.

Congrats to Everyone! #NorCalRulesDistance

McIntosh, 2:05 OMG

Lots of NC results but particularly impressive was the SJS's women dominance of the 1600/3200 and NCS's boys & girls dominance of the 400.

As a contributor to MileSplit, I have had the pleasure of talking to many of the athletes that competed this weekend. The Denner's are truly special, never anything negative to say about their competitors and kind of like Tirunesh Dibaba, baby face destroyers, really proud of them. And it's easy to see Olivia O'Keeffe for what she built herself in to, but at the time she won D1 cross country championship, she had never won a high school race. She was Fiona's little sister and now she is one of the most accomplished runners in the state, super proud of the work she put in to getting herself there. Sondre Guttormsen is some kind of freak of nature, stare record holder in the pole vault, 2nd in the 110 HH and he might have had a chance to qualify in the Long Jump if the schedule wasn't so ridiculous. Cathilyn McIntosh is a little more shy, but having talked to her, she seemed just happy to be running again after battling an ailment for a while. Despite not having a ton of races under her belt this season, I knew she was going to go after it at State and now she is a champion. And Matt Strangio, what can you say? I remember my son (who was a teammate of Matt's at Jesuit) saying, "We got this new kid who said he wants to break 4 in the mile during high school!" I've talked to Matt several times and the kind of confidence he has can be taken in the wrong way, but I would share with you that most of the elite athletes set the grandest goals. At the start of the cross country season, Matt told me he wanted to win state. I thought that was a pretty bold statement for a sophomore, but he went out and did it. Though he would never take any credit for it, I'd also like to say that it is not by chance that so many incredible runners have come out of Jesuit, Coach Lange is a special guy, beyond being an amazing coach, so happy for him too.

Biggest surprise at state has to be Strangio. He struggled in the second half of season, based on his first half form. His mom mentioned he was recovering from flulike illness and you could see it in league/divisional/masters. After he failed to advance in the 1600 at masters, it seemed like it had caught up to him, and also he didn't win a very pedestrian speed 3200 at masters. But none of that matters, because he is state champion!

Gomez is a wonderful result and an epic effort.

Anonymous said...

Charvet is another NorCal representative at 2nd in 800m. he went 1:50 just behind Gomez.

Menlo XC/Track Coach said...

@3:42PM Both Gomez and Charvet are amazing kids...that battle at the last 110M of that race was epic and will be remembered for ages. Great job to Jason and his HS journey of ups and downs...Great kid who is truly misunderstood by many. And best wishes to Jett at UCLA as he'll join his previous HS coach Jennifer DeRego! Can't wait to see these boys Jett, Robert, Jason, Alex, MBR, Mari, Olivia, Denners, and many more in the collegiate arena...and the upcoming kids such as Strangio, Anderson, Colonna, and many more...

Another huge congratulations to all NorCal athletes for rep'in our region!

With huge representation in the CIF distance races and lots of key wins, as well as a NXN representative this year, NorCal distance is a force to be reckoned with for some time to come. Let’s keep this thing going!

Did anyone get a split on Cameron Reynolds anchor leg for Clayton Valley in the mile relay? At the meet the announcer said the anchor for Murrieta Mesa split 45.6 Cameron Reynolds made up big-time ground on him

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know how many sophomore boys have won the 3200/2 mile at state?

Albert Caruana said...

I believe I read somewhere 2-3 sophomores have won the 3200 at the state meet. I will have to look that up.

Clayton Valley finished in 2nd place in the 1600 relay with a time of 3:12.31. That is the fastest NorCal team since Berkeley or has another team run faster between those two teams? Reynolds was really impressive and I will have to go back to the video of the race to get his split.

Albert Caruana said...

Reynolds split about 45.7 by my count. It was definitely sub 46.

Albert Caruana said...

Only two Berkeley teams and Castlemont in 1971 have run faster than Clayton Valley's 3:12.31.

pmccrystle said...

@7:55: Before Strangio (Go Big Red!), only 2: Yong-Sung Leal, Arroyo, 2001, 9:00.49; Mike Cybulski, Royal. 9:02.57

Interesting to note: Leal did not repeat, and Cybulski won again as a Junior, but not as a senior...repeating is very very difficult in HS track!!!!!!

Also, 2 mile only became a State event in 1965!

How about the love for Concord's Rayna Stanziano and her 3rd place finish in the 800M??? After the NCS MOC race, most of the conversation was on Brewer's performance and injury, with Rayna kind of flying under the radar. She has great instincts in the 800, and set yet another big PR at State (2:09.44)to finish 3rd! I might be wrong, but I think that is a 4-5 second PR from her times going into NCS.

I've only been in the Nor Cal area for about 20 years, but I can't recall the last time Concord HS has had a runner place that high at CIF - anyone know? Again - Congrats to Rayna and her coach(es)!

Anonymous said...

When was the last time Concord even had a runner at State meet?
And speaking of the woman's 800 McIntosh time I believe is number two in the country that's pretty impressive

Anonymous said...

Really happy for Jason Gomez winning the 800. My son has been running against him since the JO's and Jason has always shown this kind of promise. Does anyone know where he will be running in college?

Ron Ernst said...

Thanks for the nice comment about Jason. He has always been a great teammate for the kids at our school. He has continually elected to pace kids to their PRs in dual or league meets. He is currently planning on attending Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont.

Anonymous said...

Another soph who won the 2 Mile at State is Frank Assumma, 8:52.89 in 1977. He didn't repeat - Jeff Nelson won the following two years.

Albert Caruana said...

Jason's 1:50.21 is the 2nd fastest 800m all-time, trailing only Rick Brown's 1:50.10 from 1970.

You are talking CCS list?

Hank said...

Yes, CCS list

Albert Caruana said...

Hank is correct. I should have been more clear that my comment was regarding the all-time CCS list.

For NCS, the top 10 are:
800 METERS
1:47.31 Pete Richardson (Berkeley) 1981
1:47.9+ Dale Scott (El Cerrito) 1972
1:48.40 Aaron Richberg (James Logan, Union City) 1995
1:48.65 Jon Stevens (Mission San Jose, Fremont) 1998
1:49.1+ Dan Aldridge (Petaluma) 1975
1:49.56 Mike Katri (Fortuna) 1992
1:49.95 Kimmie James (Richmond) 1983
1:50.19 Eugene Hamilton (Bishop O’Dowd, Oakland) 2013
1:50.3+ George Coon (Miramonte, Orinda) 1965
1:50.57 Cole Williams (The Urban School of San Francisco) 2011

Jason going to a local D2 school is fine and I support him but he should be a stud at a big P5 school. If he gets his grades up next year, the sky is the limit for this kid. I would be happy to contribute to tutoring or whatever he needs to get to the next level. Let’s make this happen!

Anonymous said...

@9:23 the NCAA will not let you contribute to Jason’s success. As nice as your sentiment is, he will have to do that on his own at the next level. Everyone who has watched this kid over the last 4-6 years hopes he does well at the next level. Go get them, Joson!

Coach Small said...

@9:57, I don't know this kid or his academic situation but tutoring is not a violation of NCAA rules. There are guidelines that athletes must follow, which can be found with a basic internet search. It is worth a look and is a prime example of the absurdness of NCAA regulations (i.e. the tutor can not provide a pencil and paper).

Ron Ernst said...

Jason has fine grades and is ready to continue his success at the next level. He is ready for what college has to offer him.

Anonymous said...

Let's talk next year who are the stars returning?

Albert Caruana said...

Cross Country or Track and Field?

Anonymous said...

For CCS: In XC, look for the boys from SFMV to repeat at CCS and State, and go back to NXN with a serious shot at the podium. In track, there will be a youth movement as Cairns and MacQuiddy are favored in the 800; Colonna, MacQuiddy, Peattie, and Garcia are favored in 1600; and MacKenzie, Saul, and Colonna are tops in the 3200.

Anonymous said...

I think it’s too early for XC talk. Give it a few weeks.

pmccrystle said...

Dear @6:39 pm: I respectfully disagree! It's never too early to discuss XC! In fact, milesplit put out a flawed "Top 100 returning 3200 depth schools" list today, and got several CCS schools wrong; they didn't include one of our (BCP's) returning top 3200 runners, and left Los Altos off the list entirely, and got Willow Glen wrong by 3 seconds...so I went ahead and ran the numbers and here is my (potentially incomplete) list of CCS returning 3200 times. These times are the average of the top 5 returning 3200 times from this track season.
St. Francis 9:32.95
BCP 9:43.80
Willow Glen 9:52.09
Los Altos 9:55.20
Menlo Atherton 10:14.03
Palo Alto 10:14.40
Homestead 10:15.39
SHC 10:21.82
Cupertino 10:21.84
Palma 10:23.14
Mitty 10:24.76
Evergreen Valley 10:25.17
King City 10:25.95
Santa Theresa 10:30.92
San Benito 10:33.72
Westmont 10:33.84
Carlmont 10:38.40

OK, Patrick, you asked for it! XC predictions for CCS: DI Bell - They have a youth offensive lead by Peattie and the Topper twins. Watch out for this group at State in 2020; DII St. Francis - Will win both CCS and State. Should secure a second NXN bid in a row; DIII Westmont; DIV Palma; DV CSUS returns 4 of top 5 from last year.

Regarding MileSplit's top 3200 averages, if a meet is not entered in the database, then it won't show up when you run such numbers. If you notice an athlete's time is missing, please email me a link to the meet results and I will get them added to the database.

pmccrystle said...

Albert: True, but all those times are on athletic.net!

Hank said...

Times may be on athletic.net but Albert is not associated with them. 😁

Hank

Albert Caruana said...

There are meets missing from both databases so anything that is missing can be updated by reaching out to either site.
