Sad news

Long time United Track and Field official, Dick Connors, has passed away this morning after a battle with cancer.  For the many of you that knew Dick, he was one of the nicest men I have ever run across in all the meets (XC and TF) I attended.  He gave the same effort and seriousness to a dual meet as he did officiating the Olympics.  I am sure there are plenty of distance runners out there that recall Dick instructing them before running the 3200m. that he has arranged a lovely 8 lap tour of that said campus before firing the starting pistol.  He was also usually the man at the gate before you ran onto the Stanford track at the Stanford Invitational.

I will post the details of the arrangements as soon as I hear more.  I am sure there will be a large crowd to pay their respects to a wonderful husband, father, friend and official.

Please feel free to share your thoughts or recollections.

Many people might not know that Dick Connors was also a teacher for many years. He was my 5th Grade teacher at Daniel Webster Elementary School in Daly City. He was one of the first teachers to challenge me to a high standard and not give me good grades just for being smart.

Later on I ran for 4 years for Coach DiMaggio at Westmoor, and it was always a pleasant surprise to see "Mr. Connors" as a starter at a race. The last time I had the pleasure of seeing him was when he oversaw the waiting area at the Stanford Invitational this past spring. He will be missed.
