I'm sure I'm missing quite a few Northern California runners but Bret Gotcher (Aptos) finished 5th in 2:11:06 and Fernando Cabada (Buchanan) finished 7th in 2:11:53.

It is hard to believe that in 2000 only one runner was able to advance to the Olympics because the winner was not able to hit the A standard of 2:13. Today 11 runners ran under that mark!

Forgot to mention Danny Tapia who finished 24th in 2:15. Tapia went to Hartnell College in Salinas and is living in the Monterey area. He never broke 10 min for 3200 in high school, a testament for runners to stick with it even if you can't run D1 right out of HS.

Miguel Nuci, who also went to Hartnell, and was barely sub 12 min for 3200 in high school at Alisal in Salinas, ran in his second consecutive marathon trials as well.

Stick with it kids... don't quit on the dream!

Coach Small,
Danny Tapia sure is a feel-good story! I've never had a kid like him! He ran well in high school but was over-shadowed by some better runners on our team and look at him now! Ran like a 10:03 2 mile in high school and now he's almost running that pace for a marathon! Stick with it kids and work your tails off because you never know!!!!!
Congrats Danny, very well deserved!
