Top individual performances at either Stanford or Capital Cross Challenge? Team performances? Surprises?

Is the new Stanford course slower/more difficult than previous years?

Albert Caruana said...

I think it is. Fastest time for boys was 15:10?

15 seconds slower at least.

I agree with 15 secs slower...but not more than that because of the extra small tight loop they've added near the start and transition area. There were some great races yesterday and it was actually fun to watch Stanford "run" the collegiate races too instead of having their B or red-shirt squad racing it...

Weather was perfect too!

Best wishes at Serra Invite and Clovis next weekend to many of you!

Great to see the Stanford Invite back for one last time! We will see it again in 12 years when The Farm hosts the next Pac 12 championship (longer if the Pacific Conference adds more teams before 2030).

I attended the Capital Cross Challenge and there were a couple of notable performances. Ponderosa freshman Natalie Wieland had the fastest time of the day, running unchallenged in the Undseeded Race and finishing in 18:00 (13 seconds faster than Madison Kackley who won the Seeded Race). The girls of St. Francis put on a great display of pack running (36 second compression) in winning the seeded race 59-76 over Vista Del Lago. St. Francis number one Isabella Fauria continues her return following a 1 1/2 year injury lay off, finishing in a very controlled 18:35. The fastest boys time of the day was put in by Placer senior Jesus Guerra-Reyes in an impressive 15:30. West Torrance came up to Sacramento and won the boys seeded race over Placer in a competition that went down to the 5th man.

Thanks for the update Dan. I have been really impressed with the St. Francis girls this year especially the return of Isabella Fauria. It's not easy to return to form after that much down time.

The CCS site says meet schedule for CCS Finals will be available in September. Is today might be an appropriate time to ask for an update?

Where was St.Francis runner Eric Eng? Didn't see his name for the lancers.

Eng did not run. Not sure why. Some seniors are doing college visits. Missing Stanford for a visit is unlikely. If he is healthy and runs at Clovis, that will give us a true measure of what SF looks like this year. The top end (again if Eng is back) looks solid. The back end needs to step up like they did last year.

I don't know why Eng didn't race. He could be injured or he could have been doing his college visit. It's very possible even if it is the Stanford Invitational (in the grand scheme of a season, it's just another invitational).

According to the St. Francis team, Eric's quads and hamstrings were bothering him and were painful to run on. He likely is not injured, but since this meet doesn't directly affect his future, it wasn't a meet he needed to run.

Having 2 restarts in the boys seeded race certainly didn't help times either. Some people were almost 150m out when they called us back both times.

@1:12 Good point. the extra 300m hurt the front runners who sprinted out hard twice to make it to the first turn. I still think the course is 10-15 seconds slower than the previous version.

Albert, doesn't seem like you read the posts that you moderate. I posted on Sept 30 on the other thread that Eng was at the race and didn't run, so he definitely wasn't visiting colleges. The explanation that he is nursing a minor injury sounds about right from the looks of him on Saturday.

The first restart was especially ridiculous. I know we're supposed to appreciate all the hard work of the meet officials, but way too often these guys either don't know what they're doing or take themselves and their roles way too seriously. It was a high school race, not an important one in the scheme of things, and one kid fell. So the official calls it back 25 seconds into the race. Terrible. Given the high cost of entry and it being Stanford, I bet these guys are paid so I doubt it was some overwhelmed volunteer who deserves a lot of slack.

I heard that Colonna limped away from the finish line. Too early to know how bad it is. That would spell trouble for St Francis if Eng is also hurt and not just out for college visits. Unfortunately, with injuries to them, Saul, Mackenzie, and Strangio, NorCal distance is taking a big hit early in the season. Hope they all get back up and running for state.

Training hard to get to the next level is a delicate balance. That said so many people are obsessed with running fast in September. It’s all about league/CCS/State. For the elite few peaking at state and Footlocker. And comparing times on a new course is silly. Just race. Times don’t matter.

Eng and Colonna were running at Baylands before the WCAL meet today and looked fine. Both St. Francis and Bellarmine held out their top 7 from the varsity race so it looked like they were just getting some miles in.
