I guess it is time to start this year's discussion involving Stanfords not posting their entry times. Our girls 4x100 did not get in in spite of beating Scotts Valley head to head 3x this season. They got in. Did they use a 2014 time. this is understandable in an individual event but is unacceptable in a relay. Some teams are in the distance medley without running one this year. Is that fair? Could Stanford do what Ardadia does and allow you to enter relays based on actual performance. In the DM it is fair to take an 800/1600 performance and interpolate a 1200. What are some of the feelings out there and solutions? Greg Brock, Santa Cruz High School

I am fairly certain that coaches can enter times/marks from the previous season and in some cases, times are made up by some coaches. Not ideal as some deserving teams and individuals either run in the wrong heats or worse, don't even get into the meet.

Unfortunately this will continue until meet management starts to verify entry marks.

You can add Ross Corey of Priory to that group. He ran 1:56.32 last weekend at Adidas Distance Meet of Champions with a huge negative split.

If anybody is interested, here is my interview with Connor Ross after the CA Indoor meet.

Ross Corey was next on the list, but you asked for winners and I had already listed four runners, so I had to stop somewhere....

But looking at it again, there is definitely more of a natural break after Mr Corey than before, given that he has been fast this year, not just last year.

Coaches lie about times, have been doing forever. Get over it.

Gotta love "Get over it" guy. Thanks for the insight.

I agree with Coach Brock that this is what should be done, but at least up until recently, it is not what Stanford has asked for. The entry instructions state that you should use either a time from this year or from last year. A couple of years ago we (Amador Valley) had not run a 4x800m race yet. We knew we couldn't run what we had run the year before, so we asked them whether we could estimate a time based on this year's performances. The response that we got was that we either had to use an actual time from last year or this year. When we explained that we had graduated some seniors and didn't think we could run that fast, but certainly could run fast enough to be included in the meet, they responded by saying we had to enter an actual time from last year or this year. So we entered the time from the previous year. That's what we've been doing ever since. It's a bad system, but I guess it's the system they want to use. I just don't think they care that much about the high school portion of the meet.

BTW, big thumbs down for eliminating the 4x800 from the meet schedule.

In my previous comment I said, "Until recently" this is the way Stanford wanted things done. To my knowledge, it's still the way that Stanford wants things done, but we haven't gone back to ask for clarification after we received it the first time.

Any records going to be broken?

We will have new records in the 800s. For existing records, maybe girls 400m. hurdles.

Personally, I think it is now very easy to verify entry marks and keep coaches honest when entering their athletes and teams. Meet management should also be very clear on what marks are eligible whether it's for the current season only or not.

It's not that difficult to verify marks! Many meets do it…including Arcadia…if Stanford wants to be one of the premier HS Track Meets then they should invest the time to be one…but maybe as Coach Ozzie said, they just don't care…

Does Stanford still have non refundable entries?

Albert Caruana said...

We haven't attended the Stanford Invite the past two seasons so not sure if their fees are non refundable. My guess is yes.

As for the girls 800, the favorite will be Sarah Walker of Germantown Friends who has run 2:06.62. She has already run 2:08.97 this season indoors.

One more event that may experience a new meet record is the girls shot. The current record is 49'4" and Elena Bruckner of Valley Christian SJ has already thrown 49'10" this season.
