Looks like Saint Francis and Bellarmine had an epic dual meet this week! How often do you see dual meets with these kinds of results: 5 guys under 2:00 (Scales wins in 1:55.55); 4 guys from 4:19-4:24 (Colonna wins in 4:19.37) and eight (!) guys 9:47 or faster (Meika B-R wins in 9:28.71). At least around here, pretty much never! I see that Scales and Meika B-R tripled, and it looks like both teams were all-in on getting this victory for league bragging rights. Bell ended up with a 75-61 win. Must have been great fun to be there as a spectator!

Post above, You might want to look at the EBAL center meet :-

Post above, the original comment says “dual” meet as in only two teams. I just looked up the EBAL Center meet and 8 very good teams are listed. The comment is still valid and shows the depth of the WCAL, especially the two premier distance teams in that league. Look for a lot of auto qualifiers in the 1600 and 3200 coming out of the WCAL final next Friday.

WCAL had 12 at 2:02 or faster in 800. Top 8 sub 2. Wow! Frosh-Soph boys were better than many leagues. What’s in the water?

Tough league.

Tough indeed! Good thing the WCAL only gets 2 auto qualifiers as a league. We would hate to advance our best runners to the CCS and State! Good luck to everyone else in your league final.

@10:50am I guess that's why the at-large standards exist?

Albert Caruana said...

Absolutely.

why does it take the CCS section so long to get league results up?

Where are you all seeing the posted results for the WCAL Trials at Saint Francis yesterday? I can't find them!

@1:40 then why don’t all the leagues agree to just send their kids who can make the at-large standard? Why do we need a phalanx of 2:05/4:30/10:+ kids at CCS every year while much better kids in all leagues (but especially the WCAL) sit home every year? Love to hear your take on fairness vs. opportunity. Can’t have it both ways, no?

Every year the same comment about running the at large time. Is it fair for a kid to have to run the at large time a week before CCS (meaning he may have to peak just to get in because he is 3rd in his league) when the best guys in other leagues can coast and save themselves for CCS? No, it’s not and therefore the at large argument is invalid when it comes to fairness.

You have to have representation from each league. Some leagues are tougher than others but are not as large so they don't get the same amount of auto qualifiers.

My runner had to surpass the at-large mark last year (with a new PR after running the 1600 earlier in the meet) and finished 5th at CCS. You can either complain about the qualifying procedure or raise the bar for yourself and get it done.

Get it done? Like going full out in your league final, even if you’re one of the best in the state (e.g. Scales) because you can’t afford to finish 3rd or outside the AL time vs. coasting to an 8th place finish at SCVAL and being rested for the CCS semis? Not buying what you’re selling and never will. The system is rigged for the leagues with pull at the CCS office. Bad business when you want to advance your best guys to state.

Do you have any idea how hard kids in the Southern Section have to go for consecutive weeks just to qualify for the state meet? We have it easy up north.

And personally, I don't think there is an advantage to jogging at your league meet. Iron sharpens iron.

@4:50 You talk about fairness and opportunity. So. The WCAL is a league in which the athletes have the means and opportunities to pay an absurd amount of money to attend high school. That's a choice they've made. They're choosing to be in a much smaller league against a very competitive field. If these athletes wants to be on an "easier" path to the state meet, maybe they should switch schools.

I am posting for anonymous and changing one word which was unnecessary.

"I do and that’s their problem. I want to fix the politics in the CCS which is something like little league meets the Boy-Girl Scouts. Last time they were confronted with a proposal to change the system to value merit over the good old boy network of stacked entries for favored leagues they changed the date of the meeting and ran away like (unnecessary word)."

That is false. I am a league rep for XC and have always had a fair chance to change any bylaws. You can complain about the current process but until you come up with a fair solution, there will not be a change. Once you do that, you have to get your league coaches to agree to your proposal, then your ADs, then league reps, then BOM etc. It's not a simple process.

It’s not a simple process on purpose so they can protect the larger leagues with more political power. The auto qualifiers are way out of balance. After 2 or 3 max, the rest of the qualifiers should be based on merit. The larger leagues have no interest in doing that so they can stay fat and happy sending 10:+ runner’s to CCS so they can pat themselves on the back. Changing the date of the meeting 2 years ago was a loud signal to the smaller leagues to sit down and shut up. We heard it loud and clear but why should we accept it?

Albert Caruana said...

That is absolutely, 100% not true that the meeting was changed as a way to avoid voting on a potential proposal change.

We are not discussing this anymore.

Anonymous said...

Did they take up the proposal? I know the answer and the reason. That’s my last comment on that. Good luck everyone at your league final, especially if you need to finish 2nd or run the AL time! Use the fact that slower kids will be going to CCS without even trying as your motivation!
