2017 State Meet XC auto team qualifiers

You can check out the qualifiers for the 2017 meet at this LINK (updated). The only changes from 2016 to 2017 are as follows. The Central Coast Section loses one state meet spot for boys' Division I which goes to North Coast Section Sac-Joaquin Section. The other change is that the Central Coast Section loses a spot in boys' Division III which goes to the San Diego Section.

The second change is no surprise at all as Division III (especially on the boys' side) has become the weakest division for CCS. The first change is quite surprising but since it's based on the past four years, the average brings another spot to the 8 division 1 teams now competing in NCS (this is possibly an error and is being double checked). You read correctly, 8 TEAMS! 3 out of 8 competing teams at next year's NCS boys' Division I race will advance to the state meet. Those numbers will change in the next few years but tough pill to swallow for teams that were normally in Division I in past NCS meets and now must face a much tougher road in lower divisions. It looks like after the CIF Office went back and looked at the numbers for the past four seasons, CCS did indeed lose a spot in Division I and now SJS will now have 3 teams advance to state meet in the same division.

If you add the places each qualifier from both sections finished at state and consider that each section's score, SJS wins by 18 in 2016, 21 in 2015, and 3 in 2014. In addition, 3 of the teams that made state out of NCS D1 in the past 3 years have moved down to D2. NCS D2 is consistently strong, but for cross country, they're separated for sections and state, so it doesn't have any effect on D1.

Even in 2013, SJS wins by 1, so each of the past 4 years it has done better. Also, no SJS team has finished worse than 18th, once putting 2 teams in the top 10, while NCS has had a team finish worse than 20th 3 out of the last 4 years. What metric does CIF use to measure performance?

When do we get a preview of the CCS divisions? The stuff on the NCS is nice but most of us are waiting on the main event.

CIF only considers teams in the top 10 at the state meet for at-large spots. So 11th place is the same as 23rd...useless. Someone may correct me on this next part, but I believe that they use a point scale where the 10th place team gets 1 point, 9th gets 2, all the way down to the winner getting 10. They take the total score over the previous 3 seasons and somehow use that to divvy up the at-large spots. I don't know how a section gets multiple at-large spots.

In my opinion, this is an error that will be corrected soon (i contacted the CCS office and asked them to look into the issue.) In the last 4 years--the time frame used by CIF for allotting at-large spots--non-Southern Section top 10 DI scoring looks like this, using the 1 pt. for 10th up to 10 pts. for 1st:

Central S: 35 pts
CCS: 22
Sac Joaquin: 17
NCS: 6
San Diego 1
Using those numbers, the increase for NCS is clearly just a clerical error. I believe that the DI numbers will be revert to what they were last year, returning a third spot to the CCS and taking it from the NCS.

Coach Ozzie, I'm pretty sure it's the four year average of number of teams in the top-10 (plus the automatic two, max 7). So 10th is as valuable as 1st. This used to be published, but I can't find it on the state website anymore.

To pmccrystal:

By your math NCS should lose one spot and go to 2 and CCS should gain a spot to earn 4.

OK, if Tim is correct--and he probably is--and 10th is the same as 1st, then the number of top 10 finishes by section the last 4 years is as follows:

SS--22
CS--6 (Madera South 4, Clovis North 2)
CCS--4 (BCP 4)
SJS--4 (Jesuit 2, Davis 2)
NCS--3 (DLS 2, Monte Vista 1)
SDS--1 (Otay Ranch)

Still means that NCS should not get a 3rd spot.

If there was an error, NCS would remain at 2 auto spots and at that point, I am not sure if anybody gains a spot. It could just remain the same as it was last year with CCS teams having 3 auto qualifying spots in Division I boys.

CCS D1 teams need to get on the horn ASAP to set the CIF straight and get this spot back!

Ah well, if it was a mistake, I had a good chuckle over it at least.

Typical state run system. Don't tell anyone the formula and make too complex to understand.
