The following article was unearthed by Hank Lawson and it's from November 1980. You can also check out my interview with Walt at this LINK. Another one of my favorite interviews was with one of Walt's best runners, Paul Thomas. You can check out my interview with Paul at this LINK. For those of you not familiar with all the success Walt has had at Jesuit, check out their Track and Field top 25 list HERE. Aside from all of the success on the track, Jesuit has also won 9 state cross country titles which ties them with McFarland for the most state titles by a boys team.

Albert and all members of the NorCal running community: I was a on the Jesuit team the year that article was written...great article about a great man. One other interesting thing: the article was written by Randy Sturgeon, who was a trailblazer on the NorCal running scene, especially in the Sac-Joaquin section; I have linked an obituary about his life in running here (he passed away two years ago): http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/obituaries/article2609272.html
Young runners should note that people like Mr. Sturgeon, and Walter Z. Lange, have given countless hours to build up the wonderful sports of cross country and track in Northern California, and they should honor that commitment by knowing who they are and what they accomplished...but that could just be the curmudgeonly old history teacher in me speaking! Merry Christmas AND Happy Hanukah at the same time!!! Peace!
Thanks for sharing Patrick.
Mr. Lange is the reason I went from last place on the team to the top ten JV by the team i was a senior. He even knew my times when i was last place for the team and he and my teammates always encouraged me.
I went to Jesuit from 1992 to 1996 ran cross country and track for all 4 years.
Highlights of my Jesuit cross country career were going to the Mt Sac Invitational twice my junior and senior year, improving at the Sac Joaquin Sub Section meet by 1 minute 40 and finally getting a medal at the Sac Joaquin Section Meet at Sierra College.
I went to Jesuit with some great runners,Charlie Brenneman, Matt Farley, Scott Abbott, David Valencia and especially Mike Stember. The team won 3 state championships when i was there.
