George Atkinson III and his twin brother, Josh, who made major impacts in football and track at Granada High, confirmed that they have quit the Matadors track and field team.
Both brothers, who are headed to Notre Dame to play football, stated that the reason for their decision was the firing of sprint coaches Barney Stocking and Dean Williams on April 20. George placed third and fourth in the 100 and 200 meters, respectively, at the 2009 California Interscholastic Federation state track and field championship finals as a sophomore. He missed most of last year's postseason with an injury.
Granada principal Philomena Rambo said she is not at liberty to discuss personnel matters. Athletic director Clark Conover said he can't comment on personnel issues.
