This is exactly as a poster stated here back in May/June regarding the CIF meeting and everyone scoffed at them. Well here’s to you good sir/mam.

NCS scheduled to release their scheduling later today...

Questions to be answered:
1. Can athletes continue to practice from now to December/January?
2. Why are they going to permit athletes to participate in outside sports at same time?
3. When will local leagues set up new schedules...or will they wait for a few months?
4. Guessing that Clovis, Mt Sac and other invites off the table...

Let’s be real, this is the CIF calendar. The decision is still up to each county and district and if schools are still in distance learning or hybrid this won’t happen. But at least their is hope. Still, per CA department of health conditioning is still not allowed for youth & HS sports. Counties that gave permission didn’t have authority to do so. The first step of course is to get the state health department to allow conditioning & the governor to allow schools to meet in person.

Looks like there will be overlap in seasons...with spring season starting before fall season ends.

@9:33am. I'm not so sure about that. My understanding is that conditioning is permitted in Santa Clara County under the rules that allow summer camps, which require stable groups of a max of 12 kids for 3 weeks at a time. I don't think those rules violate State guidelines.

@9:52 State updated guidance on camps last week, specifically around sports.

https://covid19.ca.gov/industry-guidance/#statewide-guidance

DAY CAMPS Updated July 17
The updated guidance for day camps provides guidelines to create a plan for safe re-opening. Implementation of these guidelines should be tailored for each setting. Implementation requires training and support for staff and adequate consideration of camper and family needs. All decisions about following these recommendations should be made in collaboration with local health officials and other authorities, and should depend on the levels of COVID-19 community transmission and the capacities of the local public health and healthcare systems, among other relevant factors.

Recreational team sports are not permitted and will be subject to separate guidance.

Its true. Counties that gave permission were in violation and did not have authority to do so:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/sacramento.cbslocal.com/2020/07/01/state-youth-sports-no-drills-conditioning-allowed/amp/

And yes, there is still confusion. Counties gave permission but it is not allowed as evidenced here:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/sacramento.cbslocal.com/2020/07/14/youth-sports-confusion-parents-state-guidelines/amp/

If you are training as a group you are in violation. Nothing likely will happen outside of a warning but you are breaking the law and could be fined (again, unlikely).

@10:07. I’d like to add there are restrictions on camps that include ratios & having the same instructor. The biggest restriction is you need to be a child of an essential employee. It is also stated that camps do not include youth sports and can not be used to circumvent the rules. I’ve known multiple schools that have had to shut down training lately after being told they could. It’s sad.

Huge question... crystal closes at the end of 2020. Where is everyone going to race now?

Some positives...

They have delayed sports until the spring, so it looks like state XC champs is still a go? I can understand not holding it in the Fall with the likelihood of superspreaders, etc, but by Spring its gives them some time for a vaccine, or more accurate detection methods.

They condensed 3 seasons to 2, and while there is overlap, it looks like there are enough weeks to have a full season for XC and track. Track ends in late June.

Hopefully the major XC invitationals will reschedule to Spring dates, but I wouldn't expect them to invite teams from out of the area.

@10:33
the restriction of summer camps to those of children of essential workers is not mandated by the state, but may be by the County.

Basketball...soccer...track...all in same season!!

At this point this all is meaningless. No clubs or HS conditioning is allowed. So coaches be running summer camps during distance learning to skeet the rules? Not a good example for the kids and a perfect example that the coach is in it for themselves.

Now we can say our football team didn't lose a game in 2020! Bella Vista hasn't won a game since 2015 :)

The decision for CIF to hold state championships are entirely driven by money. If no fans are allowed at the state meet watch how fast it gets canceled.

Since seasons overlap...can my cross country runner run a race one day and run a track meet the next day?

1. If you have a kid running the state meet why in the world would you run him in the ground in a worthless pre-season track meet?
2. Just because a season starts doesn’t mean competition starts immediately.
3. This is assuming sports really do start in December/ January. My guess is most schools won’t be participating in sports if they are in distance learning or hybrid. This could be the easiest path to State as maybe 1/3 of schools maybe, might have a shot at competing.

CIF makes no decisions for school districts. Your county must approve schools to open, sports, & large gatherings. Then the school board has to approve (they don’t like risks & potential lawsuits. Then the union need to approve. The County & City parks must allow the venue to be used. While it’s nice to have hope I wouldn’t bet on a fall season. The biggest hope is for the spring as that’s football, basketball & baseball all in there with track.

My prediction: fall is canceled, maybe a spring.

My prediction: fall is canceled, spring is canceled, and everything after that is canceled until no one ever gets sick again.

Obviously nobody in the CIF has purchased oly trials tix......How many high school coaches have big money invested in trails track tickets? How many kids won't compete past the end of school because of family vacations? Should have figured out a way to end the season by mid-June at the latest. Assuming we have a season.

USATF Pacific cancelled their first 4 races, but is holding a few races on calendar as "likely."

https://www.pausatf.org/updated-tentative-2020-pa-xc-grand-prix-schedule/

Hopefully things improve and atleast some of the HS Seniors get a chance to run these races in advance of college application deadlines.

@8:21pm. I wouldn't read too much into "likely" on that USATF Pacific schedule. I know the organizers of one of those races and they have not communicated at all with USATF Pacific about it, so not sure where "likely" comes from. "Doubtful" is more accurate for every race on that list that hasn't already been cancelled.

Albert, any word on Crystal for 2021? I can’t see the residents there liking large crowds during a pendemic. Plus no parks are allowing any permits for any gatherings. It’s great that CIF gave playoff date$. But do they really expect a season to happen if you can’t even use a venue?

Albert Caruana said...

That's a good question regarding the Crystal Springs course. We are currently working on a plan to keep it open and in use for many years to come. Whether we get the OK to use the course or any other park for meets in 2021 is the million-dollar question that nobody can answer at this point. We can only wish for the best and hope we start to get this virus under control.

IMO, delaying the XC season is much better than no XC season at all. I think most would agree with that. The fact that you can still have XC state champions this school year, and also track championships, is a good thing.

Anonymous said...

CCS planned 3/20/21 @ Toro, not Crystal Springs.

Anonymous said...

Crystal Springs gold league meets to get there. But since you mentioned it, Monterey County is on the watch list. I doubt they’ll let in 5,000-10,000 people into the park.

AB 1384 is a California assembly bill that is being introduced to limit a school’s liability when reopening due to the caronavirus. If (and a big if) it passes would not go into effect until 2021. Any school opening before that opens itself up to costly litigation, something feared by school districts. Count on distance learning through the end of 2020 and mostly hybrid for the second semester. Would schools really hold practice if in distance learning? In a hybrid model? Will districts take on liability for sports?

Anonymous said...

Well some teams are out there trying and flaunting it on social media and even posting on their websites even when their school is closed and county on the state watch list. Clearly winning at all costs mentality.

Albert Caruana said...

If it's on social media, I am pretty certain it's well within the rules.

They were breaking the SIP but as of Monday training is allowed. It is a county/district/principal decision now.
