Which four students would be on the Mount Rushmore at your school for XC and/or TF?

Moving this back to the top. Let's add more teams and individuals in the comment section below.
There are lots of these kinds of lists so why not one for Northern California Cross Country and Track and Field? In the comment section below, name the four students/athletes that stand above the rest in your school's history in both XC and TF. You can name four students for each sport or four students for both sports. These lists will be co-ed which will definitely make it the best of the best. Thank you in advance for your nominations.

What are the events for the Miramonte athletes?

Christopher R.V. Puppione said...

Farmer is an all-time great sprinter/hurdler.

McAboy ran the 1600/3200 in the 1980s.

Marilyn Davis could win anything on the track, but gained notoriety in the distances at MHS and Cal.

Coon was a legendary 800m guy.

Of note, Mark Conover does not hold a school record at MHS, but he did win the 1988 Oly Trials in the marathon.

"Who the hell is Mark Conover?"

Christopher R.V. Puppione said...

Oh, and Wendy Sihner should be up for consideration for Miramonte--she was a monster in the 3200 and XC.

We have a long list of great kids but the top four have to be State Champions or multiple State medalists
1. Miesha Marzell, 2 time cross country state champ and unbeaten in all big meets and duals over two years. Miesha was also 2 time state champ in the 800 meters and unbeaten in all duals and big meets over two years. Miesha also ran on two state medalist 4x400 teams.(Georgetown)

2. Michelle Decoux-2 x state champion 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles her senior year also had to rerun 300 hurdles morning of the finals because of one missing hurdle the trial day of the state. Undefeated her senior year and won the Keebler National Championship meet.(USC)

3. Bisa Grant 100 hurdle State Champ 100 and 200 meter medalist, 4x100 state medalist and 4x400 State medalist. Ran four races all big meets leading up to the state meet.(UCLA)

4. Ari Wright state cross country champ and 1600 and 3200 medalist at the state meet. (Brown-USC)

Berkeley High and James Logan would have very long lists to get to only four.

I am sure somebody can narrow the choices for Berkeley and James Logan to four. For Berkeley, Pete Richardson is one. Now you just need three more.

Not sure what Berkeley's XC team one would be...but track has many candidates. This is my personal 4, and I'm sure the other, more notable alums would have much to say (marks either from our record board or Keith Conning's all-time NCS list):

Pete Richardson - 800, still #3 all-time in the nation?, national record at the time (1981), 1:47.31, leg on the state champ 4x400 (NCS #1), could also run a mean mile or 400
Kenny Robinson - short sprints, 10.39 100m (#2 NCS), 10.24w (#1 NCS all-conditions), 21.03 200m (#3 NCS), 46.94 400m (#5 NCS), on NCS #1 4x400 and NCS #2 4x100
Sharon Ware - short sprints, 11.34 100m (#2 NCS), 23.62 200m (#5 NCS), member NCS #1 4x100 and NCS #2 4x400
Yvette Bates - horizontal jumps, WELL ahead of her time with her elite marks, #6 LJ and #4 TJ in NCS history, but no marks above hers were done until 12 years later, and mostly 20+ years later!

Others considered: Ralph Gamez (distance representative, short but great peak at 8:53 equivalent 2 mile), Kerry Myers (NCS #1 HJ at 7' 2"), and Freida Cobbs (#2 NCS 400m 53.12).

Not sure how many/which won state titles and I don't enjoy going into those. Safe to say, lots.

Cleaner version for Albert to copy:

Pete Richardson - 800
Kenny Robinson - 100/200/400
Sharon Ware - 100/200
Yvette Jumps - Long Jump/Triple Jump

Obviously a ton of candidates for Jesuit HS, but as much as they have had some great sprinter/hurdler and field event athletes, these are all distance runners (in no particular order):

Michael Stember: '95 State Champ 3,200 (800-1:49, 1,600-4:04, 3,200-9:02)
Eric Mastalir: '86 State Champ 3,200 (800-1:54, 1,600-4:04, 3,200-8:44, 5k-14:01, DMR-9:56)
Mark Mastalir: '86 State Champ 1,600 (800-1:55, 1,600-4:04, 3,200-8:51, DMR-9:56)
Paul Thomas: '87 State Champ 3,200 (800-1:54, 1,600-4:08, 3,200-8:53)

Anonymous said...

Yo, Silver Creek. It's been along time since you have been leading :-)

Anonymous said...

hahaha...no kidding, Time to change our motto? 2 Gold Medalists in Track is hard to beat.

Pat said...

Correction: Stember won the 1600 in '95 & '96. In '95 he placed 6th in the 3200. In that space between Roosevelt and Lincoln I would squeeze in Pedro Reyes, 2nd at state in 1980 and 2nd in the mile at Golden West with a 4:06.01.

Back to the Silver Creek Mountain, Has any Nor Cal school produced more than one individual Olympic gold medalist in track and field? Sliver Creek had Phillips 400H and Hampton 4x100 relay along with silver in the 200.

Did those medals stand? If I remember correctly they were busted for PEDs and were involved with BALCO for a time period.

I stopped keeping count of how many Olympic Track and Field athletes lost medals due to PED violations. That said, the Harrison brothers had an amazing senior season and those in the stands won't forget their 1600 relay finish at the state meet.

Hank, i ran that link of Bay Area stars past HS friends of mine, They were swimmers. All went to MHAL/ ESUHSD schools. Set off a fire storm. The early 80s was when the ESUHSD board (Frank Fiscalini) decided to consolidate the guys and girls season into one season. MHAL swimming was no longer able to compete in CCS. Independence HS had 2 Olympic trials qualifiers back then: Jean Badding & Krista Berkland. I believe they attended UCLA. Not on list. Anyway, I completely forgot about their missed opportunities and picked an old scab.

This note is for Jason re. Amador Valley list. I think you had a pretty good girls sprinter last year who you might have to consider. Also does the name Sam Peters ring a bell? Being someone familiar with Amador XC & Track, I would say no one bleeds purple & gold more than Dan Gabor or Monica Van Wegen thou I do have to say Amber Nixon was one of my favorites I coached.
