Maton*
I can't believe it. All respect to Maton, I mean this is a really big deal and all, but the truth is that Grant Fisher always has been a better runner, and still is. He's been running in great form too, and missed the possibility of going under 4 indoors a few months ago.
I guarantee that we will see another sub-4 by the end of this season.
Wow this is amazing. I still remember the news way back in 2001 about Alan Webb eclipsing Jim Ryun's record. Same track!
Unless it is matched by another runner this year, Maton has to hands down the best distance runner of 2015.
What is amazing to me is that only one of these six broke the 4:00 mile in an all high school race, or on a dirt track, or while a Jr. in High School. My hat is truly off to these outstanding runners and their times. But, to me, the star of these stars will always be the greatest high school miler amongst them: Jim Ryun!. Imagine what Jim could have done today on our tracks and with the college/open runners pacing him on. A Beast of a runner! I am amazed by all of them!!!!!!!
He's 19 already... Still great accomplishment, but I wouldn't put him on the same level as the whole other 5 who broke 4 min in highschool
I would like to see the ages of all 6 runners and to me it's really more about maturity than age. Alan Webb was probably younger but very developed for a high schooler. Maton is still in high school so therefore eligible to be included on that list. I am certain if he is 19 that he wouldn't be the first high schooler older than 18 to be listed on some record list for HSers.
What gets me is that ALL of these "kids" that broke 4 as a HSer (except Maton) are now "retired" from competitive racing.
