I wouldn’t expect any sports in season 1 to happen without football.

@1:38pm. If you read the State guidelines, it's pretty clear that cross country and track can happen in all of us purple counties even though football can't. But I'm not optimistic that we'll get the green light from the local Bay Area counties since county guidelines have generally been much stricter than State guidelines.

@1:23. I understand the guidelines. But I also know ADs, administrators, district cabinets & school boards will not likely give a green light without football. We could’ve done XC in the fall but didn’t. Wonder why?

It's easier to justify not having any sports participating at all than starting some and not others.

Agreed Albert. And it may not matter with CA is hitting more records. With Christmas & New Years parties & family gatherings, not to mention those ignoring guidelines & traveling there is a strong likelihood the stay at home orders will be extended. I would be shocked if Jan 25 start stands. As per Mercury Znews they want to
Move football to season 2 now.

Using that logic sports in season 2 wouldn’t start without basketball. As a track coach at Saint Ignatius my feeling is the sports which can be competed within safety guidelines should move forward. No one in the football or basketball communities complained when track was cancelled in the spring.

The sports that can move forward should be allowed to. To take the position that XC and track & field shouldn’t be allowed to compete because football or basketball can’t is illogical and patently unfair.

@2:16pm. Huh? We couldn't have cross country in the fall because it wasn't permitted by state and county regulations. You may be right about some schools being all-or-nothing on sports, but that's not what I'm hearing from my AD (in CCS). If cross country is permitted and football isn't, we'll be running.

Also, you are correct. It’s not fair. But sadly the reality we live in. How many ADs visit cross country or track meets? Yet they are at every football game. I hope I’m wrong.

Follow the money. Football and Basketball make the money for the school's athletic department. Track and XC do not.

@8:12 if you are at a public school it doesn’t matter what your AD says. What does the district, school board & union say?

@6:20. Hear that a lot but when you take in equipment, refs, coaching stipends, transportation, electric bills to run the lights, etc. football is quite expensive. Out track & XC booster account is far above football. And that’s with 90% of booster money magically ending up in their account.

1:01 Then follow the playoff money. Having playoffs with no fans in the main sports is a death sentence to a section. I have heard that the SJS would shell out $400000 to $500000 to run playoffs and get no money in return. And that's not going to happen. I expect sections to announce playoffs in season 1 cancelled anytime now. Without the money coming in, there is no incentive to allow any sports to happen as a section. If you want a season, plan on counties splitting off from their section for this year and having local competition.

Here is what just came out from the SJS... https://www.cifsjs.org/announcements/2020_21/Dec182020/Memo_SJS_Update_12-18-20.pdf
Cross Country is really up in the air, and we won't know anything until the end of January. Again, not sure how we can have any type of meet unless there are very clear guidelines as to how many people can gather at one time.

If we are in purple, eventually drop to orange and football starts but then go back to red or purple do those sports stop & start with the tiers?

Everyone obviously isn’t happy about XC starting. They view this is “bad news.” Rather than being happy for the sports that can start they are upset football and volleyball can’t.

There should be a purple season. If you are ok in a purple tier sport you are season 1. No XC, just track (since you ain’t getting no parks to ok this anyway, let’s be realistic). Do your jobs CIF... support the sports that can go! There’s more to sports than your Friday football games.

Serious question. How difficult do you think it would be to host a championship XC meet in California such as the one just completed in Tallahassee? Why can't that happen here? If XC is allowed, why not get the AAU or USATF sanction, charge the kids $20 bucks a head and make it work? If it cannot happen in CA then Nevada or Arizona is a lot closer than Florida and the kids can have something here on the West coast.

A championship meet won’t be happening any time soon. Under current guidelines you can only compete in a neighboring county. No out of state competition is allowed. At this point that means even section meets / playoffs are impossible.

At this point it was announced that the governor will be extending the stay at home order. And by the looks of mall parking lots and photos of crowded airports the only thing I see “closed” are bars & schools. Don’t expect season one to happen.
