The Shot Heard 'Round the World...

With apologies to all the references to the above phrase (of course, for us SF Giants fans, there is only one choice!), yesterday's performance by Ryan Crouser may have added one more reference to the list.  Crouser, a senior from Gresham, Oregon, broke the indoor national record yesterday at the Simplot Games by throwing the 12lb. shot 77'2.75".  With that throw, the seemingly unbreakable outdoor shot put record of Michael Carter (81'3.5" set at the Golden West Invitational in 1979) now seems to be within reach for Crouser.

For those of you that are not familiar with Mr. Carter, he won the Olympic silver medal in the shot put in 1984 and was a star player for San Francisco 49ers helping them win 3 Super Bowls.  He is the only athlete in history to win an Olympic medal and Super Bowl victory in the same year.  He is also the father of the girls' national high school shot put record holder, Michelle (pictured below courtesy of fanbase.com with dad on the right and Charles Haley on the left).

You can see his entire sequence Crouser's throws in this video (longest effort came on 5th put):
