Quick recovery for Washington's Petersen
Washington's Nolan Petersen proved that it takes a lot to keep him from running.

Petersen had an emergency appendectomy on Sept. 28. But unbeknownst to Washington coach Dave Iremonger and his staff, Petersen was running again four days later.

"It was pretty amazing," Iremonger said. "His only restriction (from his doctor) was if he felt pain."

Petersen told Washington's coaches that he was pain-free on Oct. 4. He then won a Mission Valley Athletic League dual-meet race against American on Oct. 6.

On Saturday, Petersen finished third in the Mariner Invitational boys large school race with a time of 17 minutes, 18.2 seconds for the 3.1-mile Garin Park-Hayward course.

"He's still feeling like he's coming back strength-wise. He ran strong," Iremonger said.

Coincidentally, teammate Jesse Chestnut had the same emergency surgery on Oct. 5, Iremonger said.

Chestnut, who was the Huskies' No. 2 runner before the surgery, is expected to start training again this week, Iremonger said.

Track and Field Videos on Flotrack

The Internet by Jake Schmitt of the Bay Area Track Club

Think back to that first time you raced, I mean, really raced; the nerves of uncertainty, the excitement your mind creates of infinite potential, and the fear that all the anonymous faces of your competitors stirs in your stomach. As tense as this memory may make you, I’m sure there is a good possibility that the memory is also attached to a great sense of accomplishment with a newfound confidence in your ability. This revelation in your running life is priceless, it is the time when the cannot becomes the can. No amount of training or visualizations can replicate the power of naïveté once it has been squandered, once we know what actual pain feels like, what the weather is going to be like, or even, who is “better” than us.
