Congrats to Bellarmine w/ a runner-up finish. Nice NorCal showing at State especially from CCS.

I added Hanne to the list. The Bellarmine boys had an outstanding state meet securing their best team finish following 3 third place finishes in 1987, 1994 and 2019.

On the boys side, the greatest year for CCS at States ever: 6 of the 8 all time top State Meet times, including Landon Petre with the CCS State meet record (and Eli Fitchen Young broke his one year old record as well!!), Menlo broke Bellarmine's team time state meet record, Crystal Springs and Bellarmine earned their fourth podium finishes all time, the most by any CCS school, and ten teams ran all time top 100 State Meet team times, the most in any one year in the 37 year history of the State Meet!!! Go CCS!!!!!!!!!!!! I will get to work on the girls' side when I have a free period...

Biggest surprise by far was Bellarmine. From only 2nd at CCS to 2nd at State, wow! And to give even more context for how unlikely that was, the Bells were a distant 12th in the championship division of the Clovis Invitational, losing by a lot to a bunch of D1 teams that they beat on Saturday. What a day to have their best team race by far. Congrats to Coach McCrystle and the team!

Not only did Branson girls upset the top two teams from last year who returned all of their team, but they also set a Division V time record. Not bad for a team that didn't even qualify for States the year before, but as far as impressive performances go, nothing tops Menlo boys. Amazing for a Division V school to finish second in the combined results.

This is true... Boys D1 was weak this year in SJS, although Oak Ridge and Davis peaked at the end when it mattered. They had 3 qualifying spots because Jesuit was D1 a couple years ago. SJS D1 next year might only have the minimum 2 spots.

Albert Caruana said...

The state meet auto qualifiers are determined by the following. It's based on results from the last 4 state meets so one down year will not necessarily cause a section to lose a spot.
Automatic Team Entries (Bylaw 1901)
Team entries are based on a formula that includes two factors:
1) An established baseline providing a minimum number of entries for each Section.
2) Additional entries based upon the most recent four-year history of the Section team
performance in each divisional race. No Section shall have more than seven team entries in
any divisional race.

D1 in SJS has has several down years in a row. There was a year where they only gave them TWO spots for State (last year?). Now they have three and D2 has four. D2 is clearly better in both boys and girls. We will never be as lucky as Southern section and get seven spots.
