For those of you who remember Keith Conning, it was reported that he passed away on November 29th. He was a Berkeley HS coach but will more than likely be remembered for announcing many meets in Northern California such as the Stanford Invitational. He was quite the historian and, for many years, helped select the All-NorCal team for cross country. Many have said that he was such an advocate for so many athletes as well as both sports that he covered. He was also the editor for The Conning Tower which covered Cross Country and Track and Field in Northern California.

For those of us who have been around awhile Keith has done so much for promoting our sports.
I use to email with him a lot trading stats so we could each update our sites.
I had many wonderful hours with him at NCS MOC track & field meets sharing stories.
His work has helped me out so much with my record keeping.

Thank you Jim. I think because of health reasons, Keith had not been around the past few seasons in both sports so a lot of current runners and coaches don't know of him or don't know him well. I hope others chime in to share their recollection of Keith.
Keith was a wonderful and gentle human being. I loved hanging out with him at XC meets and especially the NCS MOC. He had the best stories and was always interested in others. His newsletter, the Conning Tower, was one of the first publications that focused on cross country and track and field athletes. He did a lot for our sports; thank you Keith.

Thank you for sharing Jack.
I had Mr. Conning as my teacher for Business Law at Berkeley High in the early 90's. He was also coaching cross country there at the time and always encouraged me to come out (I was a baseball player and declined :). I remember him as kind and enthusiastic about both his coaching and teaching duties. I have daughters who run now and had been wondering what had become of Mr. Conning....may he rest in peace.
