DUBLIN - Erik Olson just keeps getting better and better. In fact, the Novato High junior is now the best mile runner in the state.
Olson set a school record and meet record with a time of 4 minutes, 17.28 seconds in the 1,600-meter race at the Dublin Distance Fiesta on Saturday and, in doing so, posted the best time of the season in California.
"At the beginning of the race he got bumped around quite a bit and he didn't get the lead until halfway through the first lap, but he held it throughout," Novato coach Steve Deschler said.
For the Marin Catholic boys, Alec Govi ran a 4:30.62 in the 1,600 and also a 2:05.47 in the 800. Theresa Devine won the 1,600 for the girls with a 5:19.16 and also was third in the 3,200 (11:17.73).
Mark Klunk (4:58.5), River Raras (5:04.6), Ryan Finton (5:10.8) and Shane Kelly (5:12.8) also competed for Novato in the boys 1,600.

nice article but i'll stick with Mac Fleet and his 4:09 for a full mile indoors
wow. first off. lame post. second, erik, i'm aiming for your knees at stanford. watch out. :P
haha you got me nervous :) . four more days until the race. I'm excited and nervous can't wait to race ya sterling!
ya. i'm psyched. it's such an insane field lol. anyones race. i'm feeling good tho. finally got a solid few weeks of training without being sick. It's gonna be an insane race. i just hope someone takes it out quick. so we can see how fast we can go. rather than just see who's the fastest kicker
Erik Olson is a very good runner!! He has continued to improve excellently. Honestly, he was a good runner his sophomore year, but he's much better this year as a junior.
That being said, MCAL league is hands down the best league in the NCS. Try and find a league with 6 runners capable of breaking 4:30 and 9:40 in the 3200. Also, try to find the league that has both the best sophomore (Dan Milechman) and best junior (Erik Olson) in NCS.
Finally, Steven Iglehart is one of the best in the entire state in his division!
Dfal is pretty strong with Acalanes, Campolindo, Las Lomas, and Miramonte all being distance powers. 7 with sub 2 PRs, 9 current sub 4:30 with more right on the cusp, and maybe 5 at or under 9:40 in the coming weeks
oh not bad at all. DFAL is always good. But MCALs still has DFAL in the 3200. Just take a peek at the Stanford Results. I think there might be 4 or 5 sub 9:30 MCAL runners.
