BVAL (CCS) Cancels the Remainder of the Spring Sports Season

As found on their website at bval.org (see below). Also have heard that SCVAL has followed suit and that schools are starting to announce being closed until May 1st.

CORONAVIRUS ANNOUNCEMENT – updated 3/25/20

Due to the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19, the BVAL Executive Committee has made the determination that the best course of action for all student-athletes, coaches, administrators, parents and spectators is to CANCEL the remainder of the Spring Sports season.
We must all understand that this decision was not taken lightly, as we held our hope for a continuation as long as possible.  However, in light of the announcement that schools will remain closed through May 1st, there simply would not be enough time to adequately support our student-athletes.  We thank you for your continued support.
We all must understand the current situation and work to ensure the safety of everyone involved.  Stay safe.

Hmmm...

Making a decision before CIF/CCS (the governing body of California HS sports), wise? What if things do get better, then what?

This isn't like the Olympics where those athletes get to compete next year since they are postponed. This isn't like NCAAs where they are considering giving them another eligibility year.

Wishing those kids, especially upperclassmen all the best. And first and foremost wishing all well and health.

THE SEASON IS OVER, PANDEMIC!

If we are just talking high school sports, at this point I’m much more concerned about what types of gatherings will be allowed or considered safe next fall.

This is 100% the correct decision, and I hope the CIF follows suit. Right now the Bay area is on a knife-edge. We have yet to see a COVID-19 surge and for the most part our hospitals are prepared and managing the case volume. It's not clear if we are a couple of weeks out from the type of surge seen in NYC or if our early social distancing is having a positive impact and the surge will be averted. Let's hope it is the latter. Right now, every little bit helps and the next month will be critical. We cannot let down our guard too early. If we can bear the pain now of a lost season, we have a good chance of having productive summers and a satisfying xc season in the fall of 2020.

Schools are out until May 4th at the earliest. No way schools can start a season at that point as you would go directly to league finals.

At this point don’t expect to see schools return. The governor is funding schools 100% throughout this state of emergency. So schools are receiving more money to not be in school while saving money on infrastructure, transportation, etc. don’t expect schools to be open until August... and may shut down again in the fall if this hits flares up again.

People are losing it on the Nextdoor app because Willow Gen is still practicing. Hard to believe since school is out and BVAL canceled their spring season for all sports. Anyone know who’s practicing out there?

Los Gatos Track Club has tons of kids practicing without any concern over social distancing whatsoever.

I'm sure this comment won't be posted. But just in case it is, this is the worse disregard for kids' health by the coach and ignorance by the parents.

I hope that is not the case at all. I guess anybody can post anonymously and say some teams are doing this and that but for the sake of these young athletes, no coach should be out there now hosting any practices, time trials etc.

Such a new and strange position to be in. What coach doesn’t love the train against all odds or do more than everyone else attitude? Only this time it’s completely plausible to believe you are contributing horribly to the problem and even jeopardizing lives. Luckily running with social distancing is still an acceptable activity. Unfortunately these kids can cover a ton of ground, and I’ve never liked to encourage my runners to be out alone. Anyway, I figured I didn’t want my athletes to be in an uncomfortable position of not being safe because they feel obligated to stay in shape. Once the cancellations started I was not assuming we’d be returning anytime soon. The ones who can exercise, will do so. I gave my group some reconditions on workouts when the writing was on the wall right before K-Bell went down. I told them to revert back to winter conditioning workouts when safely possible. I have also now given them the directive to stay home if at all in doubt and of course listen to their parents and authorities. We will have plenty of time to get ready for the next race. We are all in the same boat. It’s like we all have to go through the same knee surgery and rehab. No one is gonna be racing that well once big events do return. Does anyone believe events like CIF/Mt. Sac will even happen this fall? It’ll be fun to see how gassed these kids all are the first races, and the vast improvements of the next full season beginning to end. I’d also like to remind everyone that we all know a lot of great coaches who built this whole thing, are directly in the sights of this menace, and they DESERVE our protection now. It will take patience that no one wants to have. Many of us will have to say goodbye to seniors without any proper sendoff, not to mention wasted seasons with others, but running is definitely something comforting we will all be returning to when the time is right. Let’s help make sure everyone is back for the next trip to Crystal Springs. I miss seeing you guys all at meets this spring. I would love to recommend doing a senior thread to honor all of the great seniors who in all likelihood will be missing their final season. Stay safe everyone.

I have coached many athletes that have had to miss a season for one reason or another. They come back strong and usually the extra time off is a benefit. These are young kids, they’ll be fine and when this is all over be out running again. (Hopefully without shin splints now though).

If the spring sports season is cancelled in California, I would like to point out there are still some late season track meets out there, which happen outside of the High School administration's say. For those early June meets, it is too premature to say if they will also be cancelled, but if some Track & Field athletes are continuing to train and need a meet, they might suffice.

The GoldenWestInvitational is a good post-season meet that could be poised to attract some serious high-school talent, especially for those states that postpone their state meet.
It is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 2020 in El Dorado Hills, CA. It certainly was the top track meet before Arcadia, and while the level of competition may of waned in recent years, there might not be many options for HS only meets when the summer rolls around. It doesn't have entry standards but they are capping entries at 50 participants per event.

Per the State Superintendent on March 31, sudents are not allowed on campuses the remainder of the school year. Learning must be remote and online. While CIF hasn’t said do yet this means sports is done. Question is now about the summer. It is likely social distancing restrictions move into the summer and possibly the fall.

Yes, the spring season will be cancelled, but the citizens of the seven Bay area counties should be proud of what we have collectively accomplished. Early social distancing, cancelling meets, shutting the schools and all of the rest, has made all of the difference with the latest models indicating that if we continue for another few weeks, we will avoid the disastrous surge seen in places like NYC, Chicago, New Orleans or yet to come to places like southern Florida. We will then be able to move to a phase 2 public health operation where we will implement extensive testing, with isolation of cases and contact tracing and quarantine of contacts, as was done in S Korea. We will need to restrict travel into the Bay area from places greatly impacted too, or impose strict quarantine on new entrants. During this phase we will be able to isolate the risk and open things back up to a great extent while we wait for good early therapies and ultimately a vaccine. Because of our early and aggressive steps, there is a good chance we can have a normal summer of training and a regular start to the school year and xc season, at least in Nor Cal.

I’m not so sure on the normal summer. One reporter recently mentioned there is already talks of no June or July summer conditioning allowed for football. And we all know that if they can’t do it no one can. If summer school is online I don’t see how they’d allow summer conditioning. We shall see.

I know we are focused on the present and just trying to figure out the next steps... but what happens when things start to go back to normal. What happens when inevitably a student or teacher catches it? Do we shut down schools again? Where do we go from here?

With NFL & College already taking about canceling their seasons it’s not looking good for the fall school year, let alone summer training.
