A burgeoning star

For incoming Menlo School freshman Madeline Price, the future is now.
That was plenty evident last Friday in the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Championships at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Sacramento City College. Competing in the 400-meter race, Price finished in 10th place in a career-best time of 57.94 seconds in the intermediate girls’ division category (athletes born in 1994-95). Price’s time was the best by a California athlete in her age group.

“I was ecstatic and so happy to hit the 57 (second) range for the first time,” the Hillsborough resident said. “It was just amazing.”

Amazing would be one way to describe Price’s burgeoning athletic career. Price only started running competitively in the sixth grade at Menlo’s lower school, having grown up playing basketball and soccer at age 4. But it was quickly evident that the 14-year-old wunderkind was on the path to running success.

To wit: Her time at the Junior Olympics would’ve put her in sixth place at this year’s Central Coast Section Championships. Pretty heady stuff indeed. But talking to Price over the phone, one gets a sense of a person who is well beyond her years, both athletically and mentally. Price’s precociousness is part of the reason why she put it all together in Sacramento.

Her previous personal record (PR) came three weeks ago at a regional meet in Modesto, where she clocked a 58.55. Price has improved her 400 time by three seconds from a year ago,which has impressed her middle school and club track coach Jorge Chen. Price actually entered Friday’s race with the 20th-best qualifying time, but she surpassed all expectations with a breakout performance.

Local track and field athletes wrap up efforts at national Junior Olympics

The East Palo Alto Greyhounds' Midget Girls' 400 relay team had the best finish of any local competitors at the USATF National Junior Olympics track and field championships that finished up Sunday at Sacramento City College.

The Greyhounds' team of Aishah Ahmad, Rashawn Ford, Jenae Pennywell and Nalani Williams finished sixth in the finals in 52.01. The same squad had qualified first in their qualifying heat in 51.70.

Also reaching the finals was Menlo-Atherton senior Jason McGhee in the Young Men's 800. He wound up eighth in 1:55.81 after qualifying seventh in his heat in 1:55.26. The race capped a solid season for McGhee, who reached the California State Meet for the first time in June.

McGhee also ran on the ISC International Empire TC's mile relay team that just missed qualifying for the finals, taking ninth overall in 3:19.75. Other team members included Jesse Arenas, Andrew Chapman and Juquelle Thompson. 

Madeline Price, an incoming freshman at Menlo School and also a member of the Menlo iGreyhounds, finished 10th overall with a time of 57.92 in the Intermediate Girls' 400 meters. Price's personal record last summer was 1:00.65.

Galt's Coupe wins 800; Lodi's Daley 4th in 3,000

The title of state champion may have eluded Jason Coupe in his high school career, but now the former Galt High runner has earned a national title.

Coupe raced his way to a victory in the 800-meter run in the young men's division at the 44th annual USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Championships held at Sacramento City College's Hughes Stadium on Saturday. Coupe's time of 1 minute, 52.58 seconds gave him the victory by almost half a second.

Lodi High sophomore sensation Cassidy Daley also raced in the meet, which featured over 4,000 of the nation's top athletes, and took fourth in the intermediate girls division of the 3,000-meter run.

5k Run in Menlo Park Aug 29th

I am contacting you because on Aug 29th I am organizing the first annual Kids 4 Sports 5K run in Menlo Park to help support kids and sports in East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park.  I thought it would be fun to get a bunch of High School kids competing against each other as a preseason warm up race and in tern support the underprivileged youth in our area. We are sending this email to the cross country coaches at Paly, Menlo, Sacred Heart, Menlo and MA in hopes to make it a fun competition! Evan Smith will return as cross country coach at Mountain View. Smith abdicated his position as head track and field coach last spring with Steve Kemp taking over.

"I'd like to help coach track and field in the spring," Smith said. "The ideal thing for me would be to have Steve (Kemp) be the head coach, then I would help out."

The Spartans won the state Div. II boys cross country championship in 2009.

"That was a great senior class," Smith said. "They'll be hard to replace."

First day of practice for Smith's cross country troops is Aug. 13. The Spartans will participate in the Early Bird Invitational at North Monterey County High on Sept. 11.

Where Are They Now?: Former C.P. star leader of the (business) pack

For someone who was always ahead of the pack in Indiana prep cross country and distance running during the 1970s, standing still has never been an option for Brad Rowe.

A two-time state cross country champion and two-time state two-mile champ, Rowe retired six years ago from Pumatech, but the Los Altos, Calif., resident realized he still had an unquenchable thirst for start-up companies.

"Being in Silicon Valley, even in bad times, things are happening out here," Rowe said. "I wanted to get involved in something new."

That was Scratch.fm, and he is the chairman of the company, which he said puts radio stations on the Internet, but to a much deeper extent.

"What we allow you to do is broadcast your own station, sort of like a podcast on a bigger scale," Rowe said. "People can listen to you in Finland or you can invite people, your friends only, to listen -- sort of like Facebook. "
