Ex Cross Country Runner, Robin Williams (Posted 2/18/08) RIP

While most know him for his comedic work and movies, Robin Williams is also a former North Coast Section cross country runner at Redwood HS. I have also heard that he broke 2 minutes in the 800m. but I can't confirm that he actually ran that fast (can anybody verify this claim?). He has been an avid cyclist for years and attends many cycling events such as the recent Tour of California.

You can read more about Mr. Williams in this article in the Marin Independent Journal:

Robin Williams ran 159.4 in the 880 yard run at the 1969 North Coast Section-Division 3 track meet in Santa Rosa, CA.
He was also a member of the Redwood HS mile relay team that qualified for the California State High School Track Meet.
(Source: Marin Independent Journal, May 20, 1969, page 33).

During the 1969 track Season, Robin ran 52.3 for 440 yards in a dual meet.

Robin also ran the Dipsea Race several times. The last time might have been in 1984 when he finished in 232nd place (out of 1,375 finishers).

Heard he ran 1:56ish at Santa Rosa JC.

I think you have the wrong school. He went to the College of Marin. He ran Cross Country at COM, not sure about track.

He was on the Redwood High School mile relay record team, and was voted "least likely to succeed" in the yearbook.

He was a super nice guy who would strike up conversations with a lot of my friends when he would pass by on his bicycle. He once went up to my brother at a movie theater because he saw that my brother was wearing Redwood Track sweatshirt, and talked about his memories of being on the team.

This really bummed me out today.

If there was anyone who I could guarantee a laugh during an interview, it was him.
