This is a tough one... it certainly is special when a High-schooller goes under 4:00 in the mile, and it was definitely a special memory, in a very depressing season. Watched it multiple times.

But Strangio asked Coach Wright multiple times if the facility had the proper permission to host the meet, and Coach Wright said it was going to be taken care of. I do think there is a downside of working too hard, and that is you miss some of the important details.

Also, this did cause the Golden West meet to definitely get cancelled at Oak Ridge HS, which did impact quite a few athletes.

Hope it gets lifted but appears to be a procedure problem instead of a covid problem. He should of known there would be a problem with the district about using the facility. But truly feel he had the best intentions. Hope they clear him to coach soon.

These concerns were raised here and were dismissed. Either way it’s an empty punishment as we are not likely to have any sports this year. Slap on the wrist. Nbd.

So... he went rogue and made the AD, principal, superintendent and school board look really bad. If something bad happened everyone listed would’ve been canned. If he is a teacher he’s lucky to have a job still. If he’s just a coach I’m surprised he’s only suspended.

If an individual got sick or heaven forbid died that school district would have been responsible in a court of law.

Good Luck, Bob!

Bruh everyone has been doing time trials and races in groups, whether you love it or hate it its been happening, if they didn't make this race into such a big publicity stunt and kept it to themselves no one would know or care. Breaking 4 is cool but is the real value in other's admiration, or on a more personal level?

screw the school board said...

Bob Wright is probably one of the best mentors I have ever had, as a teacher and a coach. This year I have him for history and he is already climbing the ranks for being one of my enjoyable teachers... for history, one of the most boring subjects. Everyone did him dirty and he had the best intentions. Think about it, this was a historic event that he kept on the down low. He got permission from his supervisor to host this, and he was the one who got all the heat. This man was doing it out of the kindness of his heart. I attended the school board meeting to appeal his suspension and I almost cried. These morons on the school board still voted to suspend him. He clearly enjoys his job if he is willing to host this for athletes. As an Oak Ridge runner, I am royally pissed because I am in my Junior year and I have been looking to drop my times and the only person who could help me with that is Bob Wright. So shame on the schoolboard for taking away mine and hundreds of other athletes opportunites. These dicks have to realize that they are hurting us and we have already been through so much with our track season being cancelled. I strongly felt like I had big chances for a scholarship in the 800m if I worked closely with coach but that has been flushed down the toilet now. So it makes me angry when some of these people say "Imagine if someone got sick" or "He made the principal look bad" shut up cause you don't know the full story and you don't know his intentions. Not only that but after countless emails to the AD for recommending a coach already from Oak Ridge, they decide to hire outside so the chances of Bob Wright coming back is very slim. ^^l^^

The comments above are crazy. No, not everyone is doing time trials or running in groups. Most coaches follow the rules only to have some like Oak Ridge do what they want with little consequence. He should be fired, no one is above the law. Clearly he was breaking other rules, probably practicing during dead periods too. Time to move on and follow the rules everyone else has to follow.

Yep. Pretty sure most of us weren't hosting races with FAT and video boards without the school district's, county, or state's approval. Not to mention restrictions for non-essential travel at the time. USATF officials, Milesplit, or an SI article aren't things I would consider low key in the distance running world. Following the idea of a senior from another high school without full approval shows either a serious lack of judgment or someone who thought they could just do whatever they wanted. Either way, I'm willing to bet the 2010 and 2012 NXN titles that this guy's days are likely numbered coaching at Oak Ridge. You should be mad your coach who torpedoed a great program for a bunch of guys who don't go to your school, and didn't even need times for D!.

+1 on the last comment. This comment "You should be mad your coach who torpedoed a great program for a bunch of guys who don't go to your school, and didn't even need times for D1" nailed it.

I didn't think about how he let down the team, with his actions to help runners from other schools. That was ridiculous.

I understand the loyalty his runners felt, because most of them will only have one coach. But in reflection, they will probably realize this was a good thing to happen. ORHS smartly picked up a very capable new coach who was available, with plenty of personal racing history, and national coaching experience. So many coaches know how to train runners, but don't have the experience to teach them how to race. They are different.
