Being a Distance coach, both at-large marks for the Girls 1600 & 3200 is reachable, especially 3200! We have many girls who ran faster than 10:35 this year from NorCals including: Fiona O'Keefe, Rylee Bowen, Cate Ratliff, Brooke Starn, Morgin Coonfield, Megan McCandless, Gillian Meeks, Niki Iyer, and Kristen Leung too. And many of these girls have ran the at-large time multiple times this season. This year obviously NorCal just like in the XC season is STACKED!!!! From the SoCals there's only Last year's State Champ Destiny Collins and 6th place finisher Amanda Gehrich.
So, how does the at-large mark factor into participation in the state meet? If a given athlete doesn't finish in the top X places for his/her event at the sectional meet, but he/she has achieved the at-large factor at any point in the season is he/she eligible to compete in the state meet? Just curious about the specifics...
Good question. So if you do not finish in the top X place at your section meet final, then you need to surpass the at-large mark at the same state qualifying meet. Surpassing the at-large mark anytime during the season doesn't mean anything except you are capable of achieving that mark at the section final.
Over 20 boys have made at large marks for both the 1600 and 3200 this year, but just 8 for the 800.
Also from So Cal for the 3200 is freshman Kelli Hines.
So yes--super competitive year!
Boys 3200 is toughest at large, in my opinion
