Albert, we have 2 different conversations about CCS qualifying going on below. Any chance you can start a new discussion to get everyone on the same page (literally), or should that just happen here?

What genius puts the 3200 at 3-4 pm? Couldn't they put it in the morning? If you insist on a break put a 4x800 invitational between 200 &4x4? Or flip the 1600 & 3200. Running 2 mile in the hottest time of the day is dumb.

Any predictions for who moves on in 1600 and 3200? Any surprises?

Anonymous said...

My prediction: "pain!" That's for you Mr. T fans. Biggest surprise is that 2 top 800 guys did not pull out of the 1600 already: Scales, Gomez. Scales is probably doing it for points and will not go on the state. Gomez might be in there to pace Adam like he did at top 8. Most likely will not qualify, but if he does will drop 1600 before final.

My prediction: In both boys and girls 3200 races a few take out the pace and everyone blows up big time.
This would be a great time to go out conservative and negative split. But high school runners can't help themselves. Girls heat 1 goes out 5:15-20 when it should go out 5:45-50.

It sounds like you know some inside info. "I pitty the fool" who makes anonymous assumptions about teams and individual runners they don't personally know. I'm not sure I see any reason either Junior won't easily qualify to finals in both events. Possibly state too. We also have the power merge #1 ranked 400M boy also ranked #2 in the 800M and entered in both events. I'll be interested to see what's in store. Lots of big names doubling.

Anonymous said...

@8:05 No reason that Scales and Gomez would not get to the 1600 final. Dubious that Gomez would get to State with a 4:22 PR. Just interested in why they would double since both specialize in the 800 and will have much success at state in that distance. No way they run a hard 1600 in the heat in front of an 800 race with a few spoilers. I stand by my prediction, which is as accurate as my lotto picks.

Scales is good enough to win both the 1600 and 800 at CCS. Even if he's fatigued and runs relatively poorly in the 800, there's no reason to think he wouldn't place top 3 and qualify for state. Total speculation of course, but there's meaning in being a double CCS champion so I imagine that Alex and Coach McCrystle are considering a double at CCS. If I were in their shoes, I'd do them both at CSS then drop the 1600 for state since he's #1 in the state in the 800 but "only" #10 at 1600 I believe. He's just a junior, so he will have lots more opportunities to go after the 1600 at the state level! Either way, he's a great runner and it's fun to watch him power down that final straight!

Anonymous said...

Agreed. Likely Scales wins both at CCS and then drops the 1600 at state to concentrate on winning the 800 title. That means the 4th place 1600 runner at CCS might end up at state. Even more motivation to get after it!

Anonymous said...

i think scales and gomez will both double at ccs because they are both pretty fast. Adams could possibly upset at ccs if gomez paces again. Who knows very excited and waiting to watch will happen. Also the 800 will be very interesting to see if it will be a tactical race with the runners "trolling" each other or a pure guts race.

Start the 3200 at 9 am. 4x100 at 10 am. Then 800 (not many 800/3200 doubles) and mile at the end where the 3200 is. No need to run them in 4 pm heat just because that's the status quo. Let's think of the athletes for once.

Anonymous said...

The question is less why run certain events at certain times of day because of the heat, it's why in the name of all that is good would anyone hold a track meet in a place that is known to be the hottest area in the section? Why not carmel, SF, Palo Alto? Can we get some adults in on the selection process next year?

Gomez' doubling is just plain bad choice, but Scales is doubling for points for the Bells and just plain HE IS A BEAST & can do it. Kids in the 800m will say thank you to Gomez for giving up his potential spot for State. Gomez is a wildcard anyways, either does really well or blows up...nothing in the middle. Good luck to all this weekend.

@11:34PM I like it...Old School order!!! Scales has proven over and over again that he is legit! He'll easily double up for the win at CCS. 1600 he'll jog a 4:12 for the win and whatever he has left over for a 1:53 for the win in the 800. Those are my predictions...Anyone want to go against it, go right ahead... ;) Good luck to Patrick and his boys this weekend and next Friday...it'll be great to see a good TEAM at work...Too bad Richardson isn't healthy or they would be the CCS favorites hands down.

I'd expect Scales proven track record doubling in championship rounds will pay huge dividends just like last season. Good luck to all this weekend.

Anonymous said...

@11:34 makes sense. 65 at 9 am and 90+ at 4 pm. However I think you're in the minority here. Many like it the way it is. Ofcourse they're not the ones running a 2 mile in that heat.

Anonymous said...

Harder double: 800/1600 or 1600/3200?

Anonymous said...

20 degrees cooler in Monterey than Gilroy today. Good luck to the distance runners, especially those doubling in 90 degree heat!

Albert Caruana said...

Good question. You have more time between 1600 and 3200 but some are better in 800 than 3200 so just a matter of type of runner.

Hank said...

I'd say the toughest double is the 800/3200 since there's a short amount of time (like the 1600/800) and if you had to run a hard 800 then your kick is gone and you have to rely on your strength.

I think everyone at the CCS today would agree the 1600/3200 was the hardest. The heat in the 3200 was oppressive. Anyone who ran the 1600 earlier suffered.

Coach Tim said...

@9:12 Three of the four fastest qualifiers in the girls 3200 were doubling back, so they seemed to handle it ok.

@8:05 I think the biggest reason the meet was at Gilroy this year was because they bailed us out on short notice last year when SJCC was suddenly unviable due to the construction. They did a fine job and so the section decided to come back this year. I'd be happy to consider an alternative elsewhere - but can you name a 9-lane track, with a receptive administration, and a staff capable of pulling off the meet, in PA or SF or Carmel?

@11:34 I think the argument against a 9-am start is travel time. The CCS is actually really big geographically, and Gilroy is already 90 minutes travel time (without traffic) for the furthest schools. Moving to SF or Monterey would make this particular problem even worse.

Anonymous said...

Tim, unfortunately the girls 3200 was not that competitive this year so they didn't have as much stress as the boys. Several really good boys DNF. Others ran considerably slower than their PR. The 1600/3200 double was the most difficult yesterday, hands down.

Anonymous said...

It looks like it will be cooler on Friday. Will some of the double qualifiers (800/1600/3200) stay in both races or pull of one because the times between races have been reduced by half? One hour between the 1600 and 800 seems too tight for an all out effort, no?

Ron Ernst said...

My vote for the gutsiest double of the day would go to Andy Buchanon of Milpitas who ran the 400 (49.49) and came right back for the 800 (1:59.12); that is very impressive. I tip my hat to any kid who doubled yesterday. It was a fun day to watch the athletes leave it all on the track.

Anonymous said...

Not as competitive compared to when? The last three years? Then yes, CCS had the top distance runners in the state. If your comparing the last 10 years? It's about the same. That's like saying girls throws are down because Elena Bruckner graduated. Technically your right, it is not as strong as when CCS had the best. But that is not normal.

Tim, CCS hosts at Gilroy for one reason: $$$
It's not goodwill. It's that it's free. Curious as to where all the money from our track meets go. Maybe to pay to rent venues for football? Basketball? Baseball?

Kids make invitationals with a 9 am start all the time. If that's an issue hold the meet the day before at night.

Can someone explain the CCS finals individual and team awards? How do the points work, how many podium?

Albert Caruana said...

I believe podium for each event is top 6. Scoring goes 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 for the top 8 finishers. Top 3 teams receive a team award (I believe).

Coach Small said...

Albert is right about podium and scoring.

However in the past... Top 4 teams get awards at CCS. Only top 2 teams get awards at State Meet.

@8:27 College of San Mateo. 9 lanes, check. Parking, check. In Section and easy to get to (off 92), check. Routinely 10-15 degrees or more cooler than Gilroy, check. Sign them up for 2018!

Albert Caruana said...

College of San Mateo has been brought up before. Parking...would be a little rough. Possible windy conditions...another concern. Lights...I should know this since we practice there but I don't believe they have lights for a night track meet.

Anonymous said...

Stanford has lights. Anyone know if de Anza has lights? Foothill does but it's only 8 lanes.

Albert Caruana said...

Stanford is deemed as too expensive. 8 lanes doesn't matter. SJCC has 8 lanes and Gilroy has 9 lanes but only run 8 lanes but CCS only fills 8 lanes in the final.

Anonymous said...

Then foothill is a go. Sign it up for 2018!

Albert Caruana said...

Sure and the last time Foothill hosted a Track and Field meet?

Anonymous said...

Why would Stanford charge the CCS for use of the track? They have a gazillion dollars. It would be a great gesture to host the HS meet in their section! Second question: Foothill has a beautiful track paid for by the tax payers; why do they have an expensive track if they don't host any track meets? Third question: many of the families participating in the CCS meet are tax payers in the Foothill district; why should they be charged anything to use a public facility they already paid for? Just asking.

Albert Caruana said...

NCS MOC has been at UC Berkeley as far back as I can remember. I think it would be great if Stanford could host CCS. Won't happen but we can dream.

Anonymous said...

Someone should ask Stanford nicely and if they say No, get Someone like Arrillaga to threaten their butts. Money talks and BS walks.

Anonymous said...

As far as I know foothill has no jumping facilities. Just a track and turf field. Plus Ive run there. It's not so nice and an older track.
Stanford is ideal but they don't care about the public school system or sports. Palo
Alto HS would get my vote. Right next to Stanford with generally perfect conditions.

Hank said...

No PV pits at any of the SCVAL schools except LG & SC so would have to bring in everything, not just a runway for the infield. That would take Paly out since their disc is on the infield.

Foothill has only a track, that's it.

Stanford, he-he, that's all I'll say.

De Anza has no lights (but a nice scoreboard).

Reading thru all the CCS minutes to research the Power Merge/At Large ideas I thought I read somewhere in there that a proposal was passed (maybe only presented and eventually voted down) that CCS would fill the # of lanes that a site had. If someone wants to go thru it (I'll pass) I read from 2000 - 2006 and saw it there somewhere...

It's six degrees of separation with Stanford. We need to find one of the guys who gives them millions of dollars every year who has a grandkid in track and have them make a call to the administration. That is how things get done with large corporations. A favor or a threat is all they respond to.
