Catching up with California HS (NCS) coach, Mark Karbo

Today we chat with California HS coach, Mark Karbo. He has been at the helm of the California HS Track and Field team for 22 years. This past season, his star female sprinter, Alyssa Brewer, has established herself as one of the all-time great NCS 800 runners with two efforts under 2:10. At last week's Tri-Valley meet, Brewer won the 400 in a lifetime best 55.05. A short break later, she returned to compete in the 800 and was spectacular as she ran the 3rd fastest NCS time ever, the fastest time in California this season as well as the 5th fastest time in the nation at 2:07.71.

1) How long have you been at California HS? What sports and events have you coached there?
This is my 22nd season at Cal High. I coach the varsity sprinters at Cal and last year started helping out as an assistant on the freshman football team.

2) Who are the athletes that you have coached and stand out to you during your coaching career at California HS?
Too many to name!  I have enjoyed working with all of the athletes that I've been fortunate to coach and love seeing their growth over the years.  Being able to coach my daughter and son was a special pleasure.

3) Any interesting tidbits from coaching David Klech?
David was so much fun to coach.  He always worked hard in practice and did whatever was asked of him.  He is a great example of an athlete with exceptional ability who worked hard and pushed himself to be the best that he could be while at Cal HS.  Off the track, he was a great person as well and we still have a close relationship.

4) Alyssa Brewer had a spectacular double on Saturday winning the 400 and 800 in 55.05 (above) and 2:07.71 respectively. Were you surprised with the times of both races?
Even having seen her run some outstanding races the past two years, I am still amazed at her ability to recover quickly and perform at such a high level in multiple races on the same day.

5) When did you first realize she had this type of talent?
I had seen her times in CYO track as an 8th grader and knew she was already running well.  It has been nice to see her respond to our training at Cal High the way she has and continues to improve.

6) What does a typical week look like for her with a Saturday meet?
For most of the season, I follow a plan and train through most meets with the goal of peaking at the end of the year.  I use invitationals as a way to practice high level competition.

7) What kind of workouts does she do on the track?
She trains as a 400 runner with a lot of speed work along with extensive and intensive tempo workouts throughout the year.

8) What is her longest run during the season?
It varies during different parts of the season.  She never does anything longer than 800m in meets.

9) Weight work?
She has a weight room at home and her dad does a great job of guiding her strength workouts.

10) What changes as athletes get closer to May and the section meets and state final?
Like most coaches I just start the tapering process, lowering the volume and keeping the intensity of the workouts high.  It gets more specific with race modeling and goals for different parts of the race.

11) What advice would you give a young coach just starting out as a head coach?
My best advice for coaches sounds simplistic, but I think it's important to try to help kids get as close as possible to their potential while still letting them have fun and enjoy being a part of the team. Also, it's important to be comfortable with who you are and your own style of coaching.  You should always continue to learn from others, but you still have to be yourself.

Thank you very much for your time Mark! AJC

Pushing this to the top. Let me know if any of the records below are incorrect.

I updated the list below by adding the Mitty girls 4x800m. time of 9:10.96 from the 2005 Stanford Invite.  Does anybody know if there has been a faster 4x800m. time from a NorCal team?  The other missing mark is girls 4x200m.  Any ideas on the fastest NorCal mark there?

New California State Shot Put record for Elena Bruckner, Valley Christian SJ

Valley Christian SJ senior Elena Bruckner tossed her 5th attempt to 54'7" at WCAL championship meet at St. Francis, Mt. View HS this past Friday. Her 6th throw as you can see by the result above also surpassed the previous CA record. The previous record holder was Anna Jelmini Shafter-Central Section with a best of 54'4.75" set in 2009. Bruckner's mark is also US #4 all-time trailing only Raven Saunders 56'8.25", Michelle Carter 54'10.75" and Maggie Ewen 54'8.25". For those of you keeping score, Bruckner is also US #4 in Discus with her 186'10".

CCS Track and Field Semis and Finals will be held at Gilroy HS this year

CCS Track & Field Community et al.
We had to make a venue change for this years’ CCS Track and Field Championships.  The track and field meet will be held at Gilroy High School on the same days and times, May 21st and 27th.

San Jose City College is having major construction going on and the construction company has accelerated their schedule and has blocked off access areas as well as competition areas.  This would have created a potentially dangerous situation and not conducive to a championship event.   We had hoped that we could have avoided this eventual construction, but the construction company moved up their time tables.

Gilroy Principal Dr. Marco Sanchez and his community has extended their facility for our use and we are grateful for their generous offer.  They host numerous league and invitational events on their new track and renovated seating areas, and with the assistance of CCS staff and tournament committee I am very confident we will be able to conduct a championship event.

Thank you for understanding.

Duane Morgan
CCS Commissioner

2 CCS alumnae battle at Oxy Invite 5000

Maya Weigel (Mt. View HS alumni) 16:20.19 (Maya runs for Pomona-Pitzer; looks like DIII leader unless someone else ran better this weekend)

Mary Kriege (Archbishop Mitty alumni) 16:24.22 (Mary runs for Santa Clara)

There’s probably more Nor-Cal runners at this meet if you’ve got a sharp eye looking at the results.

Jim Bordoni

If you know of other results that should be mentioned, feel free to add them in the comment section below. The Strum brothers ran 1:49.63 (Nathan) and 3:40.81 (Weston). Others?

7th annual "5 Star High Jump Camp" at St. Mary's, Berkeley

The 7th annual  "5 Star High Jump Camp"  will take place on June 16th & 17th at Saint Mary’s High School in Berkeley.  It is designed for intermediate and advanced high jumpers who are looking for improvement.  The 2 day camp will cover all aspects of high jumping... the approach, take-off and layout... as well as general and high jump specific plyometrics, drills, and specific weight-training exercises. Video will be taken of very athlete and an analysis of the video will be used to provide the best possible recommendations for each jumper.  Athletes will be presented with an instructional manual and DVD, complete with personal written evaluations, analysis and recommendations.
The camp will be limited to 8  -  10 jumpers to insure that every athlete is afforded specialized time with the coaches.    Admission to the camp is on a first come - first serve basis.   All participants must fill out a questionnaire and sign a liability waiver.  The camp is being run by former U.C. Berkeley All-American (and school record-holder - 7'5¾") Jeff Rogers who is currently the coach at Saint Mary's High School .  Coach Rogers' former pupil, 2004 California State Champion and 2012 Olympic Trials 5th place finisher Ed Wright will be the other camp clinician. Santa Cruz Sentinel Editorial: Hits and Misses, May 3, 2016: A coach’s legacy and a garden deal

The following is taken from the editorial found at this LINK.

HIT >> How does a coach take the smallest public high school in the county and transform it into a running powerhouse? That secret lies with San Lorenzo Valley High track and cross country coach Rob Collins. We offer a tip of our cap as he prepares to step down in June. The numbers are pretty stunning. During his 18-year tenure, Collins has amassed 11 Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League team championships in cross country and track, 14 Central Coast Section team championships and five state team titles. His runners have garnered 24 CCS individual titles, six state titles, two national titles and one national record. In the end, though, it’s not just about numbers. For nearly 20 years Collins has helped mold the lives of hundreds of young people, showing them what can happen when you combine smart training, hard work, passion and drive. Those lessons learned will play out over the lifetimes of his runners. Collins aims to spend some quality time with his family in Colorado, where his children and grandchildren reside, as his wife has advanced cancer. We wish the family the best.
