Honor for Estrada (Diego Estrada formerly of Alisal HS)

Found at the following link:

Diego Estrada was named the Men's Big Sky Athlete of the Week for the Northern Arizona track and field team.

Estrada, an Alisal High graduate, ran the sixth fastest time in the nation last week in the 3,000 meters, clocking 7:52.18.

This is the second time the junior has received the honor. Estrada holds the Monterey County 3,200 meter record, placing fourth in the CIF State Championships as a senior in 2008.

Roger Bannister-1954-First Four Minute Mile (HQ-Full Race)

"The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will in"
Sir Roger Bannister

The Shot Heard 'Round the World...

With apologies to all the references to the above phrase (of course, for us SF Giants fans, there is only one choice!), yesterday's performance by Ryan Crouser may have added one more reference to the list.  Crouser, a senior from Gresham, Oregon, broke the indoor national record yesterday at the Simplot Games by throwing the 12lb. shot 77'2.75".  With that throw, the seemingly unbreakable outdoor shot put record of Michael Carter (81'3.5" set at the Golden West Invitational in 1979) now seems to be within reach for Crouser.

For those of you that are not familiar with Mr. Carter, he won the Olympic silver medal in the shot put in 1984 and was a star player for San Francisco 49ers helping them win 3 Super Bowls.  He is the only athlete in history to win an Olympic medal and Super Bowl victory in the same year.  He is also the father of the girls' national high school shot put record holder, Michelle (pictured below courtesy of fanbase.com with dad on the right and Charles Haley on the left).

You can see his entire sequence Crouser's throws in this video (longest effort came on 5th put):

T&FN Special: AR 2-Mile For Lagat (update)

I posted the link (courtesy of Track and Field News) to Bernard Lagat's splits on my twitter account which you can find to the right of this page.  If you haven't seen them already, here are Lagat's splits for his 8:10.07 American record effort this past Saturday.  I would venture to guess that most record attempts look very similar to the splits below, such as Jim Ryun's 3:55.3 mile in HS, where he reportedly split 60, 60, 60 and 55.  For those of you that run as fast as you can from the gun, you might want to reconsider and check out how the professionals, such as Lagat and Chris Solinsky, pace their race efforts.

Meet the Team: Emily Blaha (Valley Christian SJ)

Check out the following interview done by Valley Christian SJ coach Josh Small with senior runner, Emily Blaha.
http://www.ccsrunning.com/2011/01/meet-team-emily-blaha.html

Here is the intro to the interview by Coach Small:
As one of the Warrior's top runners since her freshman year, Emily has not only been instrumental to the team's success as an athlete, but as a teammate and leader as well.  Blaha has finished inside the top 15 at the CCS Championship the past three seasons and had a breakthrough race at the Mt. Sac Invitational this year where she ran 18:36 for the 3 mile course, her first time under 19 minutes.  She is #4 all-time for the Warriors with a personal best of 19:27 for the 5k Woodward Park course and has personal bests of 5:15 for 1600 and 11:28 for 3200 meters.  As the Cross Country team captain, an honor she also held last season, she leads by example on the course and off.  This fall she capped her high school cross country career by being named to the San Jose Mercury News All-County Team.  She will run in NCAA Division 1 next year for the Navy.
