Please share in the comment section below how your team is dealing with the hot temperatures we are experiencing this week. What are you allowed to do? Did you shift your practice times? Did you adjust your workouts? Who determines what you do as far as your practice? What is your advice for your runners on how to better handle workouts or races during hot temperatures?

I'm not in the Bay Area but I coach St. Francis of Sacramento. We aren't allowed to practice if it's around 103 (it's actually a wet bulb formula that's complicated). My administration pulls the plug if it's too hot. I have been moving our practices to 6:30am before school to not have to run the risk of being canceled. I have had to shorten some practices in the morning because we have school at 8am, so it's a bit of a rush to get everything done. We can't go any earlier because it's dark.
+1 above. Local races are rescheduled so longer races are earlier
Practice at 6 AM for those that can make it...and then another in the evening after 6 PM for those who can't make the earlier one...good for the kids...tiring for the coach who goes to both.
Also in Sacramento…our school leaves it to the discretion of coaches. I won’t do 6:00 as it is too much to ask parents to come from all over the region to get their runner to a location by 6:00 am. Plus, from my point of view, runners need to acclimate to the heat. So, I just back of intensity and volume to reduce potential issues. Plus we go to a shaded park when possible. Air quality…that’s a different issue and I do cancel practice when air quality is severe.
With intense heat stretching into October and the pervasive threat of fires throughout our state would CIF consider moving XC to winter? NXN would be collateral damage but we could have a real NXN qualifying race to kick off the winter season.
