Hard to argue with Walt's D1 and D2 top 3 picks. It looks like he is missing some data for the D2 teams. Starting the year, the number 5-7 guys at St. Francis should be Andrew George (CS 17:02, Toro 17:37); Jon Jackson (17:03, 17:35); and Naren Karar (17:14, 17:12). Also Roey is going to be a part of that strong soph class, and not a senior as listed. Any missing data for Willow Glen?

Valley Christian will beat Mitty. They lost no one. Serra will beat them both.

Then WCAL ranking: Bell, SF, SI, Serra, VC, Mitty?

Are we going to get SJS rankings?

SJS Divisions won't be out until late August/early September so I usually wait until those are posted. Tough to rank teams when you are not sure what division they will be this upcoming season.

Any new incoming runners expected to have an imdiate impact besides for WCAL freshman teams? Where's the 4:42 from Price headed? How about the 5:07 girl from Fisher? These kids schould be game changers for decent squads.

@7:26 the fact you brought it up tells me you know. I'm a coach and didn't know those kids existed. And why are you assuming they're going to wcal. Very well could be Del Mar and Los Gatos. So you tell us.

Also I think it is rediculous to see Saint Ignatius in D3. They are a D2 caliber team. I know it is based on enrollment but give me a break. Hand them a CCS title now. Honestly their enrollment dropped? Ya right. I'd check those numbers if I was CCS. But perhaps it's time for competitive equity in xc. In every sport the top 4 wcal schools automatically go to the open division. They cry that they are so much better they need extra spots in track. Well I say the top 4 teams in WCAL should be D1 no matter what. Maybe xc should follow the other sports and reseed after teams make it to CCS. SI cherry picking D3 is flat out wrong.

11:10 I could be wrong but I think 7:26 was saying that freshmen going to WCAL teams will not have an impact on varsity (which is usually true) so other than those teams, are there any freshmen who will have an impact and where are they going. He mentioned the kid from Price who was discussed before in an earlier thread. Nobody could say where he is going then. It would be nice to know since we are now getting into the pre-season predictions, and he and others could have an impact.

As for WCAL, they get some good kids but they develop even more kids that don't come in as stud freshmen. SI has been D3 more than D2 so they are just returning to their usual slot. Looks like you are agreeing that they are favored to win at CCS.

I'd think 5:07 would make an immediate impact on any CCS team and definitely be part of the pre season ranking discussion. That's one of the faster 1600 times I've seen entering CCS as 8th grader in some years. I'm not sure where they are headed, but I'm going to just assume Bellarmine and Aptos. I'm not sure WCAL develops just as many studs that aren't discovered anymore and it's a lot easier to develop kids when you restock with 4 or 5 sub 5 8th graders each year. SI is stil D2 for boys I believe, and they'll have a have a hard time cherry picking a title in D3 or D4 girls.

SI boys are returning to D3 this year. They should be the favorites at CCS, third in WCAL behind Bell and SF.

Yes, now I see. They will probably dominate D3 like the do every other year when they flip back and forth. Too bad for VC. it's a shame these other teams don't do a good job developing their unknown talent or maybe we'd have some more exciting races at CCS instead of the same teams every year.

@7:50 and 8:14 It is unknown which 8th graders are going where to all but some of the coaches at the point. I'm sure none of them will turn down getting a sub 5 guy. To make the point that nobody is getting 4-5 studs per year let's look back at the 2015 SF team. Three of the top 7 guys didn't even run their freshman year, and 1 other ran 23:40 at toro as a frosh. That means that at least 4 of the 7 were not restocked studs targeting a WCAL school, and none was "recruited." What is really happening is that schools are recognizing and developing the talent they have. Lots of kids go to Bell, SI, SF or other schools thinking they are going to play football, soccer, baseball, etc. and find that they are just not good enough. They turn to running because they ran a lot on the field and are pretty fast. Some find out that, with a lot of hard work, they can get good and make a mark in XC. Good coaches develop these ball sport kids over a few years to become great runners with the desire to win. This should be celebrated and not played off like these are a bunch of recruited athletes that picked a school because of the running program.

I think too many put emphasis on "development." There's no secret formula. Saint Francis has practice year round. They have a culture that kids want to do sports. It's not like if these coaches go to Overfelt or San Jose high and suddenly those schools will be section champions.

The common link in programs that are successful year after year is good coaches. I am fairly certain that a quality coach would be able to build a very successful program at a school with 1000-2000 students.

The Saint Francis program is looking quite strong this year with lots of young returners. They might be able to give Bellarmine a run for their money for the WCAL crown!

Albert Caruana said...

St Francis will be a formidable foe but Bellarmine might have the best team they have had in a long time. They will be favored to win CCS as well as potentially podium at state.

12:55 I think you are one year early. Bell is stacked this year but will lose some key guys in 2017. SF will retain their top-end guys and bring along some guys in their very strong class of 2019. 2017 will be very interesting in the WCAL.

And in all probability are adding a 4:41 freshman to the mix. I'm just guessing. Anyone wanna take bets?

Anonymous said...

Which school, and how much is the bet?

Anonymous said...

Which school will the 4:41 choose for the education.

For everyone's info., your 4:41 gentleman from Price will be at Branham.
