Best High School Northern California Track and Field Athletes of All-Time

One more bump. Please list below athletes that you feel belong on the lists below. One more trivia question. Who is the runner to the left? He didn't run in NorCal but eventually became one of the most successful coaches in state history.
=====
I bumped this back up to the top. As you can see, quite a list of names and will need to be updated with athletes who competed in the past few seasons. If you also see anybody that should be added from years past, please add them in the comment section below. Trivia Question. Who is the runner to the left?
=====
I have updated all the nominees.  Who else should be considered?  To whoever asked, I would say that more weight should given to high school performances and not what was accomplished after high school.  The list gets way too big when you start adding athletes who did "OK" in high school and then really took off in college and beyond.
=====
A little project before the official start of the 2013 Track and Field season.  Who are the best High School Track and Field athletes of all-time?  Who were the best boy/girl sprinters?  Hurdlers? Distance Runners?  Jumpers?  Throwers?  Can we pick the best overall for boys and girls?  I will add names as they are listed below in the comment section.  Let's see if we can get at least 10 nominees for each category.

Seriously though, this list can easily be compiled from the NCS MOC all time list

Steve Lewis from American HS in Fremont has to be considered one of the best of the best. CIF 400 champ in '86 & '87 and then Gold Medalist in the 400 at the '88 Seoul Olympics as a UCLA freshman. Hard to top that.

Pete Richardson from Berkeley High should be on the mid-d list. He was the US HS 800m record holder winning the '81 CIF title in 1:47.31.

How about a list of PRs for these athletes. I don't know many of them listed.

But Niki Hiltz has to be considered no?

Corey Shubert (10:04, 9:16 for 3k in 1983)
Francie Larrieu (4:16 1500 AR in 1969)

David Klech was a 7' high jumper and state competitor in the Long Jump too. He deserved to be listed in both categories.

hmmm... i don't know about that. YSL does still have a national record standing today. he ran 14:27 as a sophomore in high school. He was literally 16 years old.

John said...

Wow, still no love for Pete Richardson from Berkeley. I guess 1:47.31 isn't fast enough to make the list. He only won CIF and broke the US high school record with that time. Also ran a 46 point leg on Berkeley's winning (and high school record) 4x400 team at the same meet.

Anonymous said...

Hey Albert,
Are we going to be voting for the top 3 in each category or something like that?

Andrew said...

gonna third the greatest 800 meter runner NorCal has ever seen, Pete Richardson.

Other Berkeley athletes - sprinter Aisha Margain, thrower Jere Summers, distance runner Ralph Gamez, sprinter Ken Robinson, sprinter Sharon Ware (holds many of our school's records), sprinter Stoney McGee.

Hmm seems we are lacking a mid distance girls runner...

I don't want to offend anyone here but verndon, maxwell, and many others on that list are nothing compared to Larrieu or Shubert no one has come close to them.

One of the questions was identifying "the best." As for HS distance the poster had it right above and there really is no argument here on the girls side.

Girls:
Best 3k/3200: Corey Shubert (10:04, 9:16 for 3k in 1983)

In 1998, Jon Stevens became the first CA runner to win both the 1600 and 800 at the CA state meet in 75 years. I am guessing that the competition in 1998 was a little greater than 1915 and 1923, the only two other times in history that a runner won both titles.

That men's sprint list is mind blowing. Bob Frick (#2 in the world in '36), Jim Hines (prep record holder, future worlds fastest human), Mel Grey (prep record holder). Toss in Jhavid Best and Eddie Hart and you'd have a decent relay team ;-)...and thats just the 100 guys!

I had no idea we had this kind of sprinter history in norcal.

GOTTA PUT UP ROD BERRY!
Silly man you forgot about the Redwood All-Star who put up HS marks of (1600m. of 4:12 and 3200m. 8:50.4-converted from 2 miles)! He still holds the MCAL record, much faster than that Erik Olson stud.
*Mr. Caruana, your great btw*

Peter Brewer said...

Albert:

You might do well to sort these athletes by decade, so you don't have to do the always-unresolved overall comparisons.

As for relay teams, the Berkeley teams of the '80's were superb. St. Mary's has done well in the 4x400, as DeLaSalle has done in the 4 x 800. Carondelet's 4 x 800 of the Kristen Gordon era was a national power. SLZ valley's DMR with Barrientos was best in the country that year. Oakland had the 4x100 with Jeff Layne. Skyline had a girls' sprint medley that briefly set a national record. Bishop O'Dowd's girls 4 x 400 were state champions one year. God know how many others are out there.

Andy DiConti said...

...biggest distance omission thus far is Jay Marden...8:51, crystal springs course co-record holder, kinny xc national champion...you should also include danny aldridge...1:49 800 guy...

Just got around to reading these comments - so interesting!

Here's one that none of us (probably) actually remember: James Jackson of Alameda High. In 1954, he ran the 100 (yards) in 9.4, only 0.1 slower than the world record at the time, and it equaled Jesse Owens's national high school record. The Hornet track web site has some cool info on this: http://www.hornetfootball.org/boosters/team_docs/track/Track-History.htm

That should qualify him for this list, right?

Anonymous said...

Besides Danny Aldridge..how about daughter Jenny aldridge and Kathy Costello (pleasant Hill), Clara Howowich (H Royce)

How about a top 3 for each event, and you can only be eligible for one top 3 finish. If Dunn and Gotcher are on, then you gotta put on State Champs like Craig Magness,, Mike Katri, and Jason Balkman.

How about last years P.H. 4x400?
There are definitely some studs in the distances, and I never saw Kimball run, but I don't think anyone comes close to the whuppin Fernandez laid down his senior year. 4:00/8:36!
Barrientos best year, she ended up injured and probably would have won the 16 and 32 at state. She ran 10:11 at a REGIONAL meet, where second place was 11:28. From what I remember, she pretty much owned Siraki and Bei on the oval.

Albert also Don't forget Gary Pasanissi of Aptos a State Champion in 3200m! Also From your post earlier I'm pretty sure everybody above had dominated there respected event in the era they lived in if we are covering 50 to 60 years of Track and field and I'm pretty sure everybody at Least had to be a Section or State Champion on this Great Subject you started! It's just amazing at looking at and seeing the History that a lot of us have forgotten and now we are reminded how strong of a Tradition Northern California has had in the Past and that to Come! Best of Luck this year and see you soon Albert! Rob

Take into consideration the quality of the track surfaces, running shoes, and training routines of different eras as well. Cinder tracks were prevalent in the 70's and before which was certain to slow down times, as compared to the high quality mondo tracks and such today.

A state sprint champion must be included is Chuck Bommarito (Crestmoor, 1970-71). He dominated the 100 and 220 in two consecutive years--a rare feat. In 1970, he was 3rd in the 100 and 2nd in the 220 at the CIF finals. The next year he went 2nd in the 100 and 1st in the 220. Best times: 9.5 and 21.2. Newspapers referred to him as "Silky Sullivan" -- the race horse famous for come-from-behind finishes.

I gotta throw some Miramonte names into the mix:

Dixon Farmer - sprinter from the 1950s and 1960s who owns HS PRs of 10.8 for 100m, 47.3 for 400m, and 23'6'' for LJ. 3 state titles and several NCS titles

Mark Conover - distance runner from the last 1970s. Put up a PR of 9:05.5 for 3200m but proceeded to win the 1988 United States Olympic Marathon Trials in 2:12:26. Came in with the #70 seed time. That's legendary!

Adam McAboy - distance runner from mid 1980s. 8:55.10, 4:12.13

Marilyn Davis - distance runner from early 1980s. 56.40, 2:09.72, 4:48.88. State champ 800m 1980. Won Footlocker West in 1982

Looking at the girls distance runners, it seems to be mostly fairly recent runners. Miramonte had several other stud girls in the early 1980s including Wendy Sihner and Marcia White, but maybe not quite good enough for this list.

Hey Albert...too many posts to read them all but, you missed two of the US greatest female distance runners from CA:
Eileen Claugus...Sacramento area I can't remember the schoolran 4:40.7 mile and held the US Girls HS mile record for 10 years. Also won the US National XC Championships (14-17) for 1970 and 1971, and finished 2nd at the World XC Championships in 1971. Probably the very best HS XC runner ever for Northern Cal.

Next, Heike Skaden of Encina HS, Sacto. In 1980 she set the US High School Marathon record at 2:43 while running in high school and also ran a 9:38 300M at 16. Just a couple of Oldies but Goldies for the people that only know of recent decent runners.

How can you possibly have a list without Monte Upshaw, Dixon Farmer and Ed Moody. Monte Upshaw held the broad jump record for maybe 40 45 years. Ed Moody set the National record in the low hurdles, and that wasn't even his event. Won Fresno Relays 2 years in a row, nocking off Tommie Smith in 1962. Dixon Farmer was all everything. Northern Cal track did not begin in 1980, as you must believe.

Anonymous said...

Boy, I'm glad you guys finally realized Ed Moody was the damn man in the early 60's. He beat undefeated National record holder Tom Hester in the State Meet that was voted the greatest State Meet race ever run. He was an entertainer. Waving to the crowd at 60 yards in the 100. Only ran the 180 lows about 8 or 9 times and was undefeated. Beat Hines, Bright, and Jerry Williams every time they raced. Where are you old timers who remember when track was king?

Anonymous said...

Boy, Ed Moody. That name almost makes me cry. I went to Tech in '61, '62. When he ran people would be on the roofs of the houses across from McClymonds track just trying to see him perform. Yes perform is what he was doing. Looking back at the guys, waving to the crowd. This guy could have run 9.5 many times, but never appeared to be running for times. They use to fill the stadium for practice sessions. This guy, ran 11.9 in the 120 yd. lows, which was a popular race at that time. The OAL track was incredible in the '60s . After him Jim Hines took over and was the man, and of course Olympic champion. Oh yes, Ed Moody also set the Cal State record in 180 lows in 18.3, beating the undefeated champion Tom Hester, to shock the track world in Modesto. I was there. That was '62.
