Kate Bowen (7th grade) 6th in Women's Open race at Bronco Invite. 6K 22:44.9 (6:06/mile)
Very impressive. Just a little running talent in that family.
John Lawson 50th...ugh
... and Eugene Hamilton III at 138th. Cal, where great runners go to die. Or, to be fair, to just focus on their education instead of their sport.
Gabe Arias-Sheridan at 25th. Way to go!
And you have Bethan Knights 5th at Pre-Nationals.
You never know what an athlete's focus is during XC, current fitness etc.
Lawson @ about 4:55/mi
Arias-Sheridan @ 4:52.6/mi
Hamilton @ 5:11
All frosh. It is hard to make a big impact as a frosh. Issues may include:
1) becoming small fish in a big pond pyschologic impact
2) getting used to higher mileage / new training regimen
3) emphasis on XC vs track
4) illness / injury (I've seen more than a few senior runners develop injuries in the summer before their first collegiate XC season, trying to ramp too much)
Lawson and Hamilton are entering their 2nd year at Cal. Lawson had a solid freshman track season so maybe coming off an injury. Also note Hurlock in the open race at Santa Clara. It looks like he will redshirt this year.
and Richard Ho in the Open too...is he not running at UCLA??
