  1. can someone remind me - which was the first year for the current 5K course? (which year did they drop going to 8th and 9th holes through Junipero Serra underpass?)

  2. Ruben, very good question. I know it's been at least since 2008. Maybe Hank Lawson knows? Anybody else?

  3. 2008 Was the first year. I ran in 2007 where it went to the 8th and 9th holes.

  4. Looks like another scorcher at Stanford. This last weekend is always blazing hot. They should start races at 7!

  5. 90+ on Saturday! Not fun.

  6. HaHa. 90 is nice and cool for the Stanford Invite!! I guess it's all relative. I am remembering the race 4 years ago when it was about 107+ on the course.

  7. It's guaranteed hot at every Stanford Invitational. I think last year was actually decent.

  8. Exactly... So why not start earlier? 7, 7:30, 8, 8:30... That's four races, meet is over at noon. Seems like a no brainer.

Except there are more than 4 races... Throw in the college races (and this is Stanford's course, they're not running a HS event out of the generosity of their heart) so you have quite a bit of racing going on. The college men is at 9:45, a decent time I would say - let the HSers pay their dues and when they run in college, then they get a better start time...

  10. weather.com is not forecasting a high of 88 which isn't too bad. and maybe it will come down a little more and the earlier races will have it pretty nice....

  11. The National Weather Service has a nifty feature that you can pick a specific location (by clicking on a map) to get a forecast - their computers interpolate for that exact latitude and longitude, and give you a forecast. I have found it to be very accurate, even in remote locations like the Sierras (e.g., when I'm going backpacking or skiing). Once you get to the main page for your location (e.g., for the Stanford Golf Course: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=37.42541648223881&lon=-122.1869646240234), scroll down to the "Hourly Weather Graph," click on that, select what you want to know from temperature, sky cover, etc., and you can get very detailed forecasts for specific hours of the day. Of course, as it gets closer to the day, the accuracy improves.

BTW, when I worked at Stanford back in the 80s, we were able to run on the golf course once a week - it was around lunch time, and always 80-90 degrees in the summer and fall. You can get used to running in that temp over time - my all time PR for 8k - road or XC - is on the 8k course there....

  12. I tried to find what high schools were entered for the 29th, and got lost in the Intertubes somewhere. Does anyone have a website (and navigation directions if the website is complicated?) Thanks!

  14. How do you tell if you are in the seeded race?

  15. I second that....how do you know if you are in the seeded race?

  16. Ask your coach. He/she would have asked for permission some time ago. That permission would have been granted soon after if there was room. Or, are you taking 14 boys or 14 girls? If so, 7 of those 14 are running seeded. Which 7 of 14 can be selected by your coach on Saturday.

  17. Rancho Bernardo coach Terry Dockery left one of his more talented runners home in favor of a kid whose parents sponsor their summer camp. Looks like it is causing a stir and interesting to see the backlash when he returns to school next week.
